Fish tournament started at 6 am. Caught a 4.4 pounder at 630 am. Weigh in was at 3pm.  Livewell is functioning fine and was on auto all day  . And put a frozen liter bottle of water in there when it got really hot in the afternoon.  Are there any additives that you can recommend that I should add to the water? Thanks.  He wasnt in very good shape at the end of tournament.

Take a look at the Sure-Life labs video on live well management.

Keeping the livewell water temperature in the mid 70's when the lakes surface temps exceed 80 helps the water to contain higher levels of dissolved oxygen if the water has a good DO level to start with. Using a simple oxygen aeration system to generate DO keeps the levels good.

Adding chemical like Sure-Life Catch & Relaese and/or Please Release Me helps to keep livewell bass healthy.

Using 3% over the counter hydrogen peroxide mixed 1/2 cup to 15 gallons of water generates DO and is a good emergency method to revive livewell bass stressed from very low DO levels.

How often does yours cycle on auto? Mine has several different auto cycle times and a run. I have this on the aeration and on the pump to change the water. The hotter it gets the more I change the water and run the aeration. I have left it on run during the hottest days. So far my fish have always been extremely good shape when the day is done.

I let mine cycle about every 15min, but then mine also are an open system meaning I have to manually shut my livewell off from the lake before I move at which time I make sure I turn the pump on to add fresh water as well as the re-curculate pump.  When i stop, I reopen the livewell to as so I have a constant flow of fresh water from the lake entering.  Even in 107 degree weather, ALL fish were in great shape when I released them after some had been in there from 6am till almost 4:30pm.

I've heard of freezing water bottles and adding them periodically to the tank to keep the water cooler really helps

This is exactly the advice I was going to type up.

I dont guess I know then. That is as often as I run mine on really warm days with no issue. Maybe do as the others have recommended and try the Sure-Life labs.

One thing I'm gonna add is to make sure your wells are clean. Not just of visible debris, actually clean. There a number of different methods to accomplish this. Some ppl use bleach and water, some baking soda in the water some just flush and rinse the entire system with clean water. It seems to make a difference for me. You just have to make sure your cleaning agent is rinsed out thoroughly enough to not do more harm than good.

No doubt the big thing is having enough DO for them but keeping bacteria to a minimum is also important.

Bacteria is neutralized with Please Release Me and Catch & Release, but bacteria doesn't  cause bass to roll over in a livewell, it is a post release problem.

Water temps over 85 degree can't hold enough DO and is very low in DO when a livewell is recruiting surface water. Venting the livewell helps and there are some vents availble.

Good livewell management requires knowing how to keep the bass healthy and tournament directors should be handing out info prior to the events.
