bt8897 Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 I sold a Kistler Helium 3 casting rod a couple of weeks ago and on its way to the new owner USPS made it a two piece rod. I know I should have paid the additional money for insurance ( i thought i had but didnt) So now I have the rod back. Is there anyway it can be repaired to a two piece rod? Just trying to make the best out of the situation. Thanks, Brian Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted September 7, 2016 Super User Posted September 7, 2016 The short answer is no, it probably is not worth it. Having said that check with Kistler and see if they have a no questions asked warranty. For instance G Loomis replaced a $250 IMX for me for around $80 if I remember correctly.. The nice thing was my dealer could do it. I am guessing you were selling the Kistler because it no longer met your needs. Maybe you can use the warranty, pay the difference and pick a different model that would better meet your needs. It has to cost the same but say the rod you broke was a 7 foot mh maybe you would have more use for a 7 ft heavy model instead. Quote
bt8897 Posted September 7, 2016 Author Posted September 7, 2016 The rod was a great rod for me, I just had a duplicate. Sold this one and USPS broke it in two on its way. I will call Kistler and see if the can help. Thanks Quote
Super User Big Bait Fishing Posted September 7, 2016 Super User Posted September 7, 2016 from Kistler's website - If your rod should break during its replacement time period, file an claim. If it is clear the damage was due to manufacture defect or component failure and after reviewing claim information such as registration, receipt, reason for claim, if you are the original owner then we will repair or replace your rod with a new similar model to get you back on the water as soon as possible. A return shipping fee and/or deductible will apply in some cases, depending on the age of your rod. You might be asked to return your damaged rod to our factory but in most cases we can save you the trouble and money thanks to our efficient VIP system. The warranty is not intended to cover accidents, abuse, neglect or normal wear and tear. Kistler Rods reserves the right to void any warranty claim. Obviously we can’t cover tailgate, rod locker or clumsy feet damages, so that we can cover legitimate claims for valued customers for years to come. To process a warranty claim efficiently, please completely fill in the Warranty Claim Information Form below. Within 48 hours (during the work week) our warranty department associate will be in contact with you via email or phone about your warranty claim. Tight Lines, Trey KistlerPresident and CEO 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 7, 2016 Super User Posted September 7, 2016 The rod can most likely be fixed so it will fish so close to the way it always did you most likely you will not feel the difference. http://www.rodbuilding.org/library/repair-oquinn.html Note that the best way is the over-sleeve, and if the sleeve can be glass, that's better (since the OD is larger than the ID, to better match the rigidity of the two the sleeve should have a lower modulus of elasticity. Make sure to prepare the surfaces properly for epoxy by buffing with a gray Scotch pad. The ID of the sleeve should be OK without trying to do this. Better to find a good rod builder/repairer to do it. I have done this with 4 rods and all repairs were successful. Give us your location and maybe a builder will respond. 1 Quote
mcipinkie Posted September 7, 2016 Posted September 7, 2016 Buy another one. Go fishing. If you want, I'll take the guides from the Kistler. Good guides. I can always use them. From where it looks like that one is broken, you'd never get a fishable repair. I've doing them for almost 50 years, but sometimes you just give up. Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 8, 2016 Super User Posted September 8, 2016 I strongly disagree with advice that recommends giving up on the rod. Consider that if the repair is successful, you have your Kistler back. If it is not, you still have the rod available for the guides and sleeves for future repairs. I'd like to know what the details are of the recommendation to "give up." 1 Quote
