KentuckyFriedAngler Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 I am looking for a cheap rod and i mean like 50 dollars ish. I received a free reel and it is the best reel I've ever owned actually and I want to throw it on a 7ft heavy action bait casting rod, unfortunately I can't afford much ( 50 dollars is a maybe but we will see) so I was wonder if anyone knows any place to get rods cheap. I know it probably will not be good quality but i have to deal with what I can get. Thank you in advance! Quote
Poolshark Posted September 5, 2016 Posted September 5, 2016 Berkeley lightning rod. You can get them at Walmart, bass pro, gander mountain. Also, you can watch the Wally World clearance rods and sometimes you will find a gem. I've seen falcon bucoo and falcon Jason Christie series rods there for 20+ dollars. Just keep your eye out. Also, if you might be able to spend some more, bass pro shops usually runs some good sales on their extreme and carbon lite series. You might spend 59 to 79 if you went that route. Hope you find what you are looking for! 1 Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted September 5, 2016 Super User Posted September 5, 2016 Right now Dicks Sporting Goods has a really nice IM8 rod you should look at. It is a Quantum Escalade It is a 7 footer listed as a MH but it rates 1/4 to 1 1/2ounce lures and its' line weight 10 to 25 pound test. It regularly sells for $99. It is on sale for $50. I fish two Escalades a 6'6" medium spinning and this 7 foot baitcaster. I love it for jigs, carolina rigs, and other bottom contact baits. It is listed as a mh but acts a bit heavier which is reflected by its fast tip and heavier specs. I would call around to Dicks stores and see if they have any, most stores have limited quantities of these rods. If you find it stop in and buy something cheap like a spinnerbait, a jig etc for a couple of dollars. Return home and go on to Dick's website . Fill out the online questionnaire and print your instant $10 off coupon. Now go buy your rod. You said you wanted a "heavy" action baitcaster but did not mention for what techniques. Let us know, maybe we can come up with something else but if I were you I would go look at this rod. I have fished mine heavy for the last year and am perfectly happy with it. 2 Quote

Super User fishnkamp Posted September 6, 2016 Super User Posted September 6, 2016 Berkley does make a Berkley Lightning Shock rod. It is a 7 foot MH rod with the 1/4 to 1 1/4 ounce 10 to 25 pound test and if you can find one at your local Walmart they should run around $38.00 What I have found around here in Baltimore is each Wal Mart had different stock and the same rods were not being sold at the same price so look around at different stores near you. There is a difference between the Berkley Lightning rod and the Berkley Lightning Shock rod series. The Shock is a nicer rod. Quote
Dschouest42 Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 Shimano Sellus 6'8". We have it on sale at Cabelas for 49.99 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 6, 2016 Global Moderator Posted September 6, 2016 If you live near an Academy, they make a 7' H/F Ethos that is a very good rod. IMO, the Ethos are the best rod under $100 out there. 1 Quote
Goose Creek Rods Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 It's over your $50 budget, but I picked up a St Croix Triumph X, 6'6 MH yesterday from Dicks for $79. Quote
MRBAMA57 Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 2 years ago I have purchased 3 Gander Mountain Brand MH 6' 6" baitcasting rods when they were on sale for $20 each. So far they have performed flawlessly. Caught my PB on one of them last spring. They sell them in spinning style also. When not on sale they run about $30. Quote
timsford Posted September 6, 2016 Posted September 6, 2016 The Fenwick eagle or Berkley lightning rod are nice. I think they are out of the 7' mh vendetta which Is what I was going to recommend since you said 7' heavy. Compared with pretty much every maker I've tried their mh is a heavy. You could get the abu combo they have in 7'mh and try to sell the reel or keep it since it's a great deal. You could get that combo for not much more than 50. Other than that look for a lightning rod shock 7' mh or h at walmart. They have been less than 50 several times I've been to mine, along with some vendettas and falcon bucoo rods. I'd look for some deals like that at walmart, or any big box outdoor store like academy, bass pro, or cable as on their store brand rods. The h20 ethos from academy gets a lot of praise and I've used and enjoyed several bps and cabelas rods Quote
OldSchoolFishing Posted September 13, 2016 Posted September 13, 2016 Fenwick Eagles are good, just bought one and love it. I also have two Fenwick Silver Hawks. They are also pretty good rods. Cabela's Fish Eagle 50 on sale fits your budget and is good. I had two and stupidly sold them off. FE50 has lots of length/power combinations from which to chose. My favorite is the bass pro BPS Extreme. They seem to be sold out on the website (except for one 6' model) and therefore not available right now. But when they are in stock and on sale, they are really good rods close to your budget. Quote
