Best Trolling motor to get

I am looking a the Minnkota Power Drive controll type of motor and the standard foot control stearing type of motor which one has the best stearing control.

The Power Drive, Terrova, and Ulterra are all similar in style as they are all electric steer.  They get better as you add on thrust, shaft length, and I-pilot features.  The other primary competitor would be Motorguide but I am not very familiar with them.

I have a 24V MotorGuide with70lb. thrust. It's a bear to steer on high speeds as the torque wants it keep it turning and my normal response is to let up pressure on the pedal. I've had the remote 24V and steering was a breeze, but with the model I had the speed or thrust setting remained where it was set with no indicator to show what it was when you turned it back on. 

One too many times it was on high and the motor was turned when I pressed the remote. The last time it pulled the mount off the bow and bent the mounting bolts .

First off?? what is this motor to be on? a fiberglass 18 ft bass boat?,..or a 16 ft tin multi rig?,...this makes a big difference. 

I have had a cable steering trolling motor on my boat, then went to a electric steer. To be honest, the cable steer was kinda easier to determine direction as the angle of my foot told me where the motor was being directed without having to look down at it, whereas the elcetric steer you need to look at the motors head to determine direction,..but,...the electric steering doesnt take much strength to move it, and the cable will wear you down after a day of fishing. So its kind of *** for tat, as far as power and speeds I think both have the same offerings.

I don't care for the pedal on the PowerDrive Minn Kota units...hard to use for me.

Liked the one on my Terrova just fine and the Ulterra is an improvement on that.

Make sure you at a least look at the Motor Guide...quality and performance are about the same with both brands (very good) but you might find you like one better than the other.  Buy that one....

There is a new Terrova coming out for 2017. Quieter than the old version. Plus the foot pedal and spot lock have been improved. The remote control is better than the remote on the Motorguide.

I had heard that about the new 2017 Minn Kota models...I'm looking forward to them...but having just coughed up the cash for a 36 volt Ulterra...it'll be a while before I buy another trolling motor.

I'm with you on the remotes...I know I like Minn Kota remotes better than Motor Guide remotes...but others don't...that's why I always suggest folks go look at both.

Also, there is a new one coming out later this fall called the Ultrex which is a hybrid electric/cable steer.

Most professional bass boats have the Fortrex on them right now.

In conjunction to the improved Ulterra that is coming out in the fall?

Someone on here said that the new Ulterra was supposed to have improved spot lock. Didn't say anything about quietness.
