wheasle Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 I live in Central New York right on Seneca River. I am really only planing on going through the river, but perhaps sometimes out into a small lake, Cross Lake if anyone knows of it. Should i be looking at jon boats, or mod v boats. The rivers aren't as calm as they are down south, i was just wondering how a flat bottom boat will pound on the waves compared to the mod v, or deep v boats will. Any help would be appreciated, thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~ Chris Quote
Ben Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 When you speak of mod-V, I think of something like the STV's, Shadows etc. Not too sure these would make much of a rive boat. In rough water, a flat bottom is going to beat you up pretty good, but a mod-V is also. A deep V is the best for cutting rough water, but it's the worst for running shallow water, you can't beat a float bottom or a tunnel hull back-bay boat for shallow water. Quote
fishn bear Posted February 24, 2006 Posted February 24, 2006 It depends on how deep the water is that your are going to be running in. I have had both a deep v-hull and a flat bottom boat. imo, if the water is going to be less then 3-4 feet I would go with the flat bottom. However, the flat bottom will not do as well in the choppy water as the deep V will but the falt bottom is a more versatile boat over all. One thing to think about if how the water level in the river, and how much it changes through the year. I dont know about up north but down south rivers can get real shallow in the heat of the summer or of course in times of little rain. Good luck with your choice! Quote
wheasle Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 Hey, Thanks for all the info. The river I'm mostly going to be fishing is well deeper than 3 or 4 feet. There are some spots however, backwashes and such, that are about 2 or 3 feet. Will i still be able to get in there with a 12' mod-v. Another thing I am worried about with the v bottom boat, is if it will be stable enough to put a deck on. I know the kid who I plan on buying it from, and he says he can stand on one end of the bench and it wont tip. Will a deck add on more spread out weight and help it stable, or am i thinking all wrong? Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~ Chris Quote
