Super User JustJames Posted August 30, 2016 Super User Posted August 30, 2016 How you guy feel about fenwick aetos? I just got myself new Fenwick Aetos MH casting for Jig and plastic. I havs tried this rod a few days on water so far I dont like it very much compare to my shimano crucial gen 2. The reel seat on fenwich is kind of not so comfortable to hold for too long and my lower arm get tired pretty fast. Should I return or do a trade here for another crucial or cumara? Quote
timsford Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I'd rather have it than both shimanos personally, but I'd say you could work a deal out on a trade if that's what you want to do 1 Quote
timsford Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Also you might want to try the new crucial in hand if you don't like the aetos since it is also a split style reelseat and if you palm the reel all you touch on the rod is blank. Actually the cumara is the same way and it is also now discontinued so if you want a cumara, better get one now. The zodiac has a much more comfortable grip, but I still prefer the feel and build quality of the aetos. If warranty is a concern, the aetos has a lifetime warranty and shimanos only have a year. I am a big aetos and Fenwick fan, but I just like the aetos better, I'm not sponsored or anything. There are tons of good rods in the 100-200 range. If I was gonna spend enough to buy a crucial or cumara I'd either keep a little money and order a Powell max 684, look at irod (genesis is 150, usually but I've seen the 250 dollar air on sale for 150), or put a little with what you already have and get a *** ***. If it's a more all around rod and not just bottom contact, I'd call the tackle trap and see what kind of deal they can give you on a hammer Quote
Super User JustJames Posted August 30, 2016 Author Super User Posted August 30, 2016 Thanks. I alway palm my reel and cover all the way when fishing plastic, that way i can feel bites through line not just the rod itself. With fenwick, the gap in between trigger is so narrow instead of touching just the blank my fingers is on top of arbor(the thread part?). Crucial with custom reelseat I got plenty of room and can palm my reel all the way. The reel in question here is curado 70 which small enough for my small hand. Maybe becuz I compared M blank (crucial) with MH blank (artis) which is bulkier? Quote
timsford Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 Which crucial is it? Is it the black foam grip version or the newest ones with split seat and zero foregrip that can be gotten with either split grip or full cork? The newest versions feel about the same as the aetos, cumara or any rod with the skeleton style seat. I don't really care for it either but like the aetos so much I get over it. If you just can't stand it look at the hammer, irods, kistlers, zodias, and daiwas. All these use way more comfortable seats. What length power rod do you have or do you want 1 Quote
NYBasser Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 If you can return it, that is the best way to go. Trades are often complicated and it can be challenging trying to find a person willing to trade a specific rod for an other specific rod, etc. I would either go with a Dobyns Fury, or with a O.M.E.N Black gen 2. I have the Curado 70hg on the 6'7" m and it palms great. Both are great rods at a great price. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted August 30, 2016 Super User Posted August 30, 2016 When I got my first Aetos (7' MHF), it was the short trigger that bothered me. Well...maybe not the length, but how thin it is. Yet I never noticed it when using the 6'6' ML Aetos. Now that I think about it the longer rod hasn't bothered me the last few times I've had it out. Maybe I'm getting use to it. The most comfortable reel seat on the rods I have is the one on my Smoke. Feels great to me. As NYB said, I would return the rod if at all possible. Unless you've got a buddy willing to trade a rod you like. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted August 31, 2016 Super User Posted August 31, 2016 If you don't like it you shouldn't use it. Me - I like mine. I've got 6 of them. 7'2" MH ex fast is the best jig rod I've owned so far. ( I haven't gotten into Loomis or other $200+ rods - yet ) I like the slightly thinner handle and the split grip. Quote

I will give it a try a few more times and see how it goes. Quote
timsford Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 If you don't like it either return it or try to trade or sell and get one of these other rods. Which aetos is it? Quote
MikeWright Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Catch a beast with it and tell me how you feel!! Quote

The Aetos locks down and every reel I put on it there are no threads left in the gap, even the 200 size reel I have on my jig rod. The new Crucials also have a down locking reel seat so I'm guessing you run into the same problem as my buddy has exposed threads in the front with his Shimano reel and exposed threads behind, like you are experiencing now, with a Daiwa reel. Super User JustJames Posted August 31, 2016 Author Super User Posted August 31, 2016 The rod is 7'2" MH, XF the reel is shimano curado 70hg. I think i know where the problem is, the trigger part on Aetos is fatter than any of my other two rods. Thus i had to reach all the way when palm to get my pinky finger to wrap around. This is a palm method I use a lot lately for dropshot / senko where i can feel the bite with my index finger touching the line. gotta get used too with different palm technique. Quote
Mark888 Posted September 9, 2016 Posted September 9, 2016 I love my aetos, i have a medium moderate, perfect for cranks Quote
