Kyle46N Posted August 28, 2016 Posted August 28, 2016 I know there have been a few Aetos reviews recently with the Fenwick sale going on. I have a more specific question for those who have fished with the Aetos spinning rods. I'm in the market for 2 new drop shot/small shaky heads/1/8th - 3/16th oz jigs rods. I was pursuing some other options, specifically the Loomis E6x mag medium dropshot (LOVED the feel of this rod), but all these phenomenal Aetos reviews caught my eye. Can anyone tell me about the action of their 7 ft , 7'2", and 7'6" medium spinning rods? I can see the weight ratings on them, but I don't have an option to put my hands on them before buying. How are the tips on these? Any flex at all? Are they true mediums? How effectively could they cast a 1/8th oz jighead with a TRD or some other small plastic? Ultimately if I erred in the wrong direction, it would be to lighter side. I definitely don't want to get these and they end up having too heavy of an action. Thanks for any help! Quote
Super User lmbfisherman Posted August 29, 2016 Super User Posted August 29, 2016 I have a Fenwick Aetos Spinning 7'0 Medium fast. The tip is softer than most other brands of Medium Fast. I can cast weightless finesse zoom worms with ease. Not going to win distance but good enough. I would expect what you want to use it for will be fine. 2 Quote
timsford Posted August 29, 2016 Posted August 29, 2016 Don't have any of the long spinning rods. I have the short versions and love them. I've been eyeballing the 7'6" for Deepwater tubes and finesse jigs. Ratings are spot on with a good flexible tip to load with light stuff on shorter models 1 Quote
Super User smalljaw67 Posted August 29, 2016 Super User Posted August 29, 2016 The 7' medium is perfect for your applications. The rod has a soft tip which works for drop shot fishing but it isn't so soft that it can't handle a shaky head or other finesse techniques. Quote
Kyle46N Posted August 29, 2016 Author Posted August 29, 2016 Thanks so much for the info! Really makes me feel more comfortable with the order. You just helped make my birthday better! 1 Quote
DubyaDee Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I use the 7'6 ML XFast for tubes/shaky heads/grubs. It's perfect for tubes and grubs. You'll be able to cover plenty of water. The ML is appropriate and really keeps the fish pinned well. When my rod arrived a few years ago I remember them labeling the rod 'drop shot' on the packaging. I don't use it for drop shot at all though. 1 Quote
Kyle46N Posted September 9, 2016 Author Posted September 9, 2016 Just following up, but I was able to use both Aetos spinning rods today, 7' and 7'2" mediums. You guys nailed it in the descriptions. Giving tip and a strong backbone, these were exactly what I was looking for. They can fling the light stuff, but can also handle heavier drop shot if I wanted. Quote
