Hey everyone,

I'm in a bit of a dilemma. I'm wondering if I should purchase a medium or medium heavy action rod?

I mainly fish small streams and rivers and throw small inline spinners and weightless senkos.

Which type of rod is going to be the best for these kinds of light weight applications?

Thanks guys!

I'd probably go with a medium light set up but if you're picking between a MH and a M definetly go with the M.

Spinning reel on medium rod

I'd agree with the above advice. M or ML, leaning towards ML.

It all depends on the specific rod and personal preference though. Make sure whatever particular rod you're buying has the backbone to make a solid hookset for the senko.

medium fast action rod that's 7' long. that is my most used rod. my only problem is that I keep switching between 12lb and 15lb line....

I assume you mean M or MH power rod.  Personally I think you are better off with a short spinning rod considering what you are casting and the areas you are fishing.  I would not want any heavier than a Medium power rod.  A 6' ML might be a viable option depending on the rod's rating.  How much are you willing to spend?

The in line spinners are best on a Medium light fast action rod.  In a river situation i would be looking 6'6" to 7' length range.  the shorter rods work for accuracy in areas with small pockets and along the river bank unless your wading.  Depending on the size of the worm you could be in the ML to MH range.  I like flick shake worms and trick worms in rivers.  You could use those and more on a ML as long as you go weightless.

If I was using those things you mentioned it would be a medium fast, just the inline spinners I might go ML but a weightless senko is probably best on the medium. But it also depends how you are rigging them. T-rigged you need a little more power to get the hook to bite, wacky rig might be fine on a ML.

It also depends a lot on the brand you choose.  I might use a medium fenwick, but there's no way I would want a medium power abu rod for that as they are closer to mh. Personally I'd look for a shorter 6'-6'6" ml or medium power rod with a fast or ex fast action. I mostly use a 6'3" fenwick smallmouth med xfast spinning rod. The rod is really more of a medium light and fished anything from 1/16-3/8 well. I'd look for something around that length with a soft tip and a weight range the same as most of the baits you throw

Weightless senkos are too heavy for a ml

I would use a ML for the spinners, and a M for the weightless senkos.

If you get a good quality Medium power rod with a nice good soft tip it can do anything and everything a Medium light rod can do. and some of the things a Medium heavy can do. just go to your local tackle shop and feel the rod tips for yourself and don't order online unless you know how the rod feels

Medium Light Fast

My favorites are a minimum 5 power up to 7 power. I fish heavy cover with bait casters.

Most important is buy a quality rod.

I have a few  setups that that I would recommend for your types of fishing. I use a Bass Pro carbon light 6'8" medium extra fast for sinkos, the soft tip let the fish load up good and with the stiff backbone setting the hook is not a problem. My inline spinner setup is a ML Avid with a fast tip, just lift the rod for a hook set and the ML bend in the rod keeps the fish hooked. Last but not least is a Fenwick HMG 7' HMG medium light fast. The rod is rated ML but fits between ML-M. If your wanting one rod I would take a hard look at these in the length that fits you fishing situation.
