Looking at a used boat but I am very hesitant to purchase because it has a 1993 Suzuki fuel and oil injected 150 HP 2.7 Liter V-6 motor. I am not the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to motors but I believe it is a 2 stroke?

My family has only owned 2 previous motors and they were Mercury and Yamaha. Any suggestions on Suzuki motors? Are they good or bad? Is it a quality motor that can last a long time?

Anything would be helpful at this point......very frustrated!!! :mad::mad:

Thanks

Sorry, can't help you with your question as I've
no knowledge of those motors.

So I'll just welcome you to the forums!

...pretty simple solution...get it checked out top to bottom from a certified suzuki mechanic. best 100-200$ you'll spend.

Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

No need to be frustrated.  It's reasonable to be hesitant when making this type of purchase.  Regardless of make or model.

If you're not an outboard mechanic, take it to one.  Pay the individual for his / her expertise and allow them to ease your mind.

There's at least a decent chance that a 23 year old engine may need some work.  Unless it was meticulously maintained, in which case it probably wouldn't be for sale.

btw - obtaining any parts needed for the motor built last century could be problematic.

The suggestion to have it checked out is the correct one. As for Suzuki engines they were hot motors. They were made well and were fast.  The problem was simply not enough dealers for them. I knew two guys that had them and were very happy with them. Both happened to be on Gamblers, just coincidence

Agree with all of the above, particularly these two

  1. Get it checked out.
  2. A 23 year old motor that's perfect is going to be rare.

I'm on my 2nd Suzuki 4 stroke (Both DF140s) - both have been great, quiet, fuel efficient.

The concern about finding someone to work on them is valid as there are far fewer dealers than other makes...but nothing has broken on mine so I can't really speak to that part of it.

I have a 1990 Suzuki 2.7l 150hp direct injection on my boat and knock on wood it's been great to me so far. Has started up every time first crank even when the water temp was 48 degrees and air temp was even colder. I also haven't done any maintaining on it thus far having it since the beginning of the year

My uncle had a what I would guess was very early 90's Ranger bass boat with a 150 Suzuki on it, man that thing was FAST! Not sure how fast modern ones are with 200+ motors but that boat was ridiculous compared to our Bayliner bass boat with a Force 85. Seems like the fastest he said he ever got up to was 72mph.

It also smoked a LOT on cold startups, I definitely remember that. But ours was broke down all the time and his never was.

I have a 98 DT 200 efi on my 98 Champion 191 Elite which I bought in 2010.  I was hesitant at first too, but it's been a d**n good engine and I would buy another in a heartbeat. Very dependable and runs great!  I wouldn't call it real fast, but it's fast enough for me.  I get about 62 mph from my rig on it's best days.

Thanks for all the responses.  I have read a lot of posts on here the last couple of days and I agree with everyone.  Its all about the maintenance and how you take care of them.  If you beat on it and don't take care of it then it just wont last long.
