My son caught a frog a few weeks ago. That in itself wasn't too odd, but he managed to catch it using a plastic casting plug. He was practicing casting with his little Cars fishing pole, and the frog either got mad that something foreign invaded his space, or thought he'd hit the jackpot of a nice mouth-sized fish. Either way, he bit down HARD and my poor son freaked (he thought he'd hurt the frog). I gently shook the rod and the frog hopped away.

One of those times when I wished I had a camera because in hindsight it was hysterical.

I used to do alot of fly fishing and have caught a bird and a bat, both took the fly out of midair on a backcast.   It's not all that uncommon actually, although when I tell the story everyone who isn't a fly angler can't believe it.  The other thing I caught was unidentified and still gives me the heebie-jeebies a little.   Night fishing (wading) in the Fox River in Geneva, IL,   I hooked and played something large, which I think was an eel.   It rolled once but as it was dark I couldn't for sure say what I saw, but the image is burned in my brain.   I was not disappointed when it got off.

I also "caught" a starfish once.

I caught a whole bunch of bass one day. For me this would be considered a strange catch ?

I literally brought in a beer glass that had been chucked in the river from a pub right next to where I was fishing with an octopus inside it, he was using the glass as a home

Clothes, rod and reel combo (cleaned it up and it works fine to this day), lures, rocks, etc.  My "oddest" was on a charter boat off the coast in Florida as a kid.  Something hit, and I started fighting.  And let me tell you, it was HEAVY!  At first I had no idea what it was, only that it must be something HUGE!  A few minutes later the captain is laughing and playing with the throttle, which I assumed was to help me.  Then it got closer, and I finally saw it.  Looked like a giant jellyfish!  I was totally confused and then everyone was laughing and cheering me on.  Get it to the boat, finally, and it was a freaking huge, thick plastic bag.  I had hooked the side of it and it was opened up like a freaking umbrella.  It put up 10 times the fight of the 'cuda I caught a little later.

My niece takes the cake though.  She hooked a bluegill...via the line that had already passed through it where it had swallowed a hook!  So she literally snagged the line that he had passed and drug him in by his butt!

Caught a ~3' water snake today.  Had him landed and was trying to figure out how to get the hook out when he just let go of the lure and shot off.  I dragged him through like 10-15' of water and lifted him up like 3-4' and he held throughout all that.  Must have really wanted that Skinny Dipper.

In Tenn we call Em WaterDog's like you catch in a small branch. It was caught RedEye fishing on a 1/16 Oz Black Fly. When we got it in Junior My First cousin shot it with a pistol & then took it off. I think i've seen 3 of them all in the upper end of SoakCreek in SpringCity Tn. It was about 16 In Long & about 3 In around. I never dreamed one could get that big, if i hadn't seen it i wouldn't of believed it MySelf. It makes you wonder just how big will they get.

My wife hooked Marble Falls Dam the first time I took her fishing for white bass.
