St. Croix mojo bass

I had a mojo bass rod break on the third time using it while reeling in a fish. I have never broken a rod under normal use. It was a 6' 4" heavy frog rod.  Has anyone else had problems with these rods?  I'm just trying to find out if I got a bad one or if it is an issue with the line.  They are sending me another one.  I would like to keep it because I liked it as a frog ride until it broke.

Rods that are properly taken care of will last a very long time. If there is a breakage within the first few fish it's usually caused due to manufacturer defect or damage sustained during transport, after that it's generally user error. Not knowing under what circumstances yours broke I can't say which it is, but I can vouch that the Mojo Series are good sticks. I just picked up a 6'8" MH/F about a month ago that has put over 100 fish in the boat without issue. St. Croix has you covered with their great customer service.

St. Croix should be able to replace that rod for free, give them a call!

I am not sure which Mojo you had either  SC II or SC III. If you had a SC II then you will  be getting a nicer rod, as the SCIII rods are built with a better grade of graphite. St Croix has not had a reputation of breakage and since you only had it a short time most likely it was a manufacturing defect. It is a bummer but I have even had rods as expensive as a G Loomis rod suffer fromm a defect and break. They replaced it and I still fish with its replacement 15 years later.

I now have four of the 2nd. generation Mojos. Awesome rods in my opinion.

How did it end up breaking and where? 

it broke reeling in a fish about six feet from the boat about 18"-2' from the tip. They are sending me another one.  They offered a $140.00 credit or a new rod.  I was just curious if it was an issue because if it was I would take the credit.  Definitely nothing against St. Croix. I have another St Croix that I love but it is a much more expensive one.

I have about a dozen Mojo's, most of which are the saltwater version. I haven't broken one, but I've seen a few break before, due to misuse. The more common issue I've seen with them is the reel seat comes loose on them and spins on the blank. Me and a friend of mine have sent many Mojo's back for bad reel seats. I haven not seen this issue on the freshwater Mojo's, however. At least St Croix is pertty easy to deal with in regard to warranties.

THE two common rod failures and how to prevent them :

1) High Sticking : Never allow your rod to go past 11 O'clock while fighting a fish .

2) Lifting Fish With Rod : Don't use your rod to swing a fish into the boat unless you are very experienced and know what your doing .

Reel seat and guide breakage are more rare than rod breakage caused by #1 & #2 above ...
