11.4 lbs, 27 3/4" x 16:...Curado E7 and St Croix Avid 7' Med pwr fast action. Trying out the alberto leader knot for the FIRST time that day using 30lb braid (forget which kind, probably spiderwire stealth as I got a bulk spool cheap) and a 12lb yozuri hybrid leader. Managed to get her away from a laydown out into open water. There she found and wrapped the line on a horizontal log  directly in front of the boat that I didnt know was there. For what seemed like an eternity I had to listen to the tensioned piano wire like "twing, twing, twing" sound of that fish rubbing the line. With a new leader knot that I didnt trust, a med action rod, frayed line, I couldnt do much as far as leaning on the fish.  I just stood there talking and audibly petitioning our creator to let me get her in.  After what seemed like forever (but was likely all of 20 seconds) the line goes slack, I quickly reel up and thank God almighty she was still on.

Seemingly I'm not one to catch a break hunting and fishing. Have a buddy who randomly hooks into 4' gar on crappie jigs, has trophy deer approach while hes dropping a deuce, etc. He was broke once and played the lotto on his last 5 bucks. Won $750... Horse shoe in both pockets. I have to go after it hard and put in time and pay close attention to gear and whatnot. But that day things went my way. The alberto knot has been a staple in my arsenal ever since.

September 1998, dont remember the rod or the reel but it was a baitcaster set up. the line was 12 lb Super Silver Thread mono. hook was/still is Gamakatsu 3.0 offset shank worm hook. unpainted 3/16 oz bullet and a 6" Renegade curly tail worm in Fall Pumpkin Pepper flake. i was fishing a roadbed when a small school of shad appeared on the surface. i threw in towards them, my line sank, stopped, then started moving off. she was 8.6 lbs and i have not landed anything close to that since.

Is it at all disheartening for years (and in some cases, decades) to pass and still not catching another PB? I'm guessing the answer is "no," and that the potential to break that PB is what keeps most guys hooked.

I don't generally think about a PB when I'm fishing.  I came close to breaking a decade old PB LMB a few years ago. One ounce shy.  I was really happy to get that fish, and I have a picture of it (see above).

I broke my PB SMB twice in the same year.  My partner catching a 6-0 right after my 5-12 took the air out of, a bit.  I think his PB SMB is over 7.

Today: I was throwing toads with double hooks into pads. I was using a Lews custom lite magnum grass with a TP reel with 50# power pro.

Hooked a giant.. Fought him for 10 minutes then lost him at the boat with the net just ready to slide under him.  Potentially a state record largemouth.

Been dwelling on it since it happened ?
