Dan_the_fisher Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 My gf is wanting to buy me a reel for my birthday, wondering what the best deal can be had on a dc reel is? Im having a hard time finding good prices on a excense, maybe the older metanium dc maybe? Is there any good places to look best jls as well because it looks like they increased prices. Thanks Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted August 21, 2016 Super User Posted August 21, 2016 Now is the wrong time to be buying goods fro Japan. However the prices will only get worse. Years ago the Exsence DC was about $325 give or take. Last year the price of the reel fell to about $255 and stayed there for many months. I decided to buy a 2nd one for about $260 a few months later. Right now they are about $350 or more. Other DC reels like the Metanium DC are even more and so is the Conquest DC and Antares DC. The only DC reel that is the cheaper is the Scorpion DC. While a nice reel it isn't near the distance caster as the others. However it is very foregiving and would be ideal for windy conditions, wind resistant baits, or someone starting out. I couldn't tell you where to find one used. You may try keeping an eye on IchibanTackle but I am not sure how often used DC reels pop up. Obviously Ebay would have the most options new and used but the prices with shipping seem about the same as Digitaka (around $350). It has been a while since I have seen an Exsence DC pop up used so unless you are willing to wait for one to pop up you may be best taking the plunge on one new. 2 Quote
Jon G Posted August 21, 2016 Posted August 21, 2016 Yup JDM prices are only going to go up. Sure miss last year when 2013 Metaniums were $260-275 lol. 1 Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Why did they go up so much? I haven't looked in like a year and I was shocked Quote

We will see the prices climb even higher. A good way to tell where the exchange rate is would be to look at a reel solid both in the US and in Japan. Take the Alphas SV 105 for example - US price is $269 and the Japan price is now over $225. I bought one last year for $185. Some of these reels are now almost catching up to US reels in price thus taking away the allure of ordering overseas and saving some money. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 Ah I didn't know it would affect it that badly, shoulda bought one last year lol. Does anyone know if the non-bfs alde is worth the price increase over a 70 curado? I've never even say a alde but I have always wanted one, but I'd hate to get it and it feel just like my curado that costs half as much Quote
Yudo1 Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 I'm so glad I bought my exsence dc last year for $260. I don't think we'll see those prices again unfortunately. Even at current prices it's worth it IMO. The best frogging reel I've used. Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted August 22, 2016 Author Posted August 22, 2016 I'm trying to decide if the '15 met dc is worth the price over the excense Quote
timsford Posted August 22, 2016 Posted August 22, 2016 Tackle tour just did a review on the metanium dc and said that it was much better at casting lighter weights under 3/8 than all the other dc reels. I've heard most people use their excense dc for frogging or heavier duty stuff which makes since because it's basically a dc version of the chronarch d. I'd say it depends on what you are wanting to throw with it. If you are wanting a frogging reel or something for throwing heavier stuff I'd get the excense, if you want a reel that can throw 1/4 ounce and up well I'd get the metanium Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 Awesome, I've pretty much narrowed it down to getting a mgl or a dc met. Don't know if the extra hundo is worth it or not. Both reels seem extremely nice from their reviews as well Quote
Super User 00 mod Posted August 23, 2016 Super User Posted August 23, 2016 DC Met all the way for me. So far, I am actually not a big fan of my MGL....... Jeff Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted August 23, 2016 Author Posted August 23, 2016 That's good to hear, I'm just nervous about getting a reel that's so expensive with no experience of it. I read a lot of mixed reviews on dc reels which has me worried. Quote
Super User Goose52 Posted August 23, 2016 Super User Posted August 23, 2016 DC reels are something that you want, not really something you need. They do have some advantages in wind and in other conditions and are lots of fun to use. Just don't be thinking that they are magic and will cast "twice as far" and "catch twice as many fish". If you are curious about them however, you should try at least one. I have three DC reels (Calais DC, Calcutta TE-100DC, and a Met DC) and the one I use the most is the Met DC. One of the advantages of the Met DC at the time I bought it was that it was available in three gear ratios, unlike the previous DC models that were typically only available in a single gear ratio (like the USDM Calais DC only in 7.0:1, or the Exsence - only in 8.0:1, etc.). So, you can select a ratio that best satisfies your intended applications. For me, I got the 6.2:1 as being the most versatile for my needs; it is on a rod that is always in the boat and gets used each time I'm on the water (I reeled in 7 bass with the Met DC just this morning ). I didn't toss any baits under 3/8oz like Tackle Tour recently did, but here's a review of the Met DC I posted back when they first came out: Met DC Review Good luck deciding ! 3 Quote

Super User 00 mod Posted August 24, 2016 Super User Posted August 24, 2016 I have several Met's from different years/ratios/dc-non dc etc and I just think out of all of them the newest MGL is my least favorite. I think my Met DC's are just my favorite of the Met line up and right up there with my favorite reels out of everything. The MGL is a good real, don't get me wrong, I am just a self admitted reel snob. That, and I got the Met MGL and the new 2016 Antares DC a couple weeks apart, so that probably skewed my opinion...... Jeff Wow I'm jealous, I decided to skimp out on the met as a birthday present and went with a 15 aldebaran and I'm gonna treat myself with a jackall poison adrenna Rod for hopefully a sweet combo, I'm definately gonna pick up a met dc sometime this winter because I have been hearing a lot of hype about them and I deffinalty wanna try out a dc reel. 2 Quote

Jeff DC reels can do that to you....That is exactly how I feel about CQ 50 DC's over the CQ 50's... 2 Quote

Dan what do you plan on doing with a DC reel.....I have been using DC reels since they first came out in the Round, really not much difference in maintaining them. I will say this the 16 Antares DC does raise the bar when talking DC reels...... 1 Quote

I'll see how I like this alde' for now, possibly I'll get a dc reel later on this year for traps or jerkbaits. Quote

No regrets, and I really liked my Met DCs. 1 Quote
Dan_the_fisher Posted August 29, 2016 Author Posted August 29, 2016 Reel made it in and man is this thing light!!! It has a little bit of a whiny sound at the gears, anyone know what that is? I'm assuming I just needs to be broke down and cleaned really good like all my other shimanos Quote
