mono backing vs electrical tape???

any advice would be appreciated, I will be using 30 LB braid on a 100 yd capacity reel.

I use a cheap mono (10-15#) filled between 1/4 to 1/2 the spool capacity, then attach the braid with an Alberto knot. Works great for me.

Also use mono. Saves money I think especially since I tend to respool more than I should so I'm not wasting braid

I run 1/2 a spool of Stren Clear Blue  14 pound test. If you fish like I do often when fishing for bass and stripers we catch big cats. I have had a few stripers and cats pull the double uni knot out through the guides. Tape wont go out. I figured it out The xtren was lee than 10 cents a foot braid is almost 3 times that and fluoro was way more. You do not need 300 feet of braid, 150 of mono and 150 of braid.  If you ever have a major line issue you only need to replace half a spool.  One more advantage is the mono won't slip on the spool if your arbor knot is tied correctly.

I run cheap WM #8 lb. mono on about 60% ~ 70% then finish with braid . The thinner mono helps braid under #20 lb. test from digging in . Be sure to wind both mono and braid on tight !

This, for the last couple years I started to use old braid for backing.

If it's 100 yards of 10lb or heavier mono, I'd use some mono backing so you didn't have to use so much braid to fill it. If it's a shallow spooled reel I'd use Teflon plumbers tape instead of electrical and do a few wraps to cover the spool. That's all you really have to do unless you are using a deep spooled reel that will use too much line. Is it bait casting or spinning and what reel is it?

Mono for sure.  I tried using electrical tape and the braid was slipping on the tape!  Maybe I just wasn't spooling the braid tight enough, but for me it's just mono from now on.

Unless of course I was supposed to put the electrical tape over the line after tying my arbor knot.

Mono and braid have the same density, so equal volumes weigh the same.  The title of the post mentions elect tape.  Not advisable in my opinion, would likely in time get gunky, hard to remove, hard to clean the reel.

30 or 40 yds of mono backing, will help save some money rather than full spooling with the more expensive braid.

Dacron braid like First String is about $5 /100 yards and 1/2 the weight of mono.

All braid tied to the spool holes or tape, havent had any problems so far.

I've used 2 wraps of electrical tape for years now without issue. Braid lasts a very long time and you can flip it around in a year and have brand new line again.
