I have been fishing from shore for 5 years now ever since my dad sold his Lund Explorer, but he doesnt want to buy a expensive boat again so its up to me to buy a boat.  Ill have roughly 2,000 to spend and I saw these mods you guys put on jon boats and that got me really interested in them.  Im looking at probably a 14' jon, and I would like to put mods on it.    Probably put a 9.9 on it with a trolling motor.  Do any of you guys know sites that show different mods and how to do them?  Also is a 14' jon boat pretty stable to stand in? Because I tend to stand more than sitting when I fish.  Thanks all!

Also is it possible to put a 40 lb thrust bow mount minn kota all terrain on it?  Im guessing 40# will be enough and rather save money if I dont need a 55#.

I've got a load of info that i would be willing to share with you.  I'm sending a PM.  About the 14' being stable... it depends on how wide and deep it is.  There are tons of different "14's" like 1436 1448 etc.  I believe the 1436 can be a little tipsy if a deck is built so i wouldn't go under 1448. If your just standing in the floor of a 36 then you should be alright.  Again i've done alot of research on the subject (Modifying jon boats) and may be able to help with any questions you have.  Low Budget Hookers should be able to help too. You can check out his sweet boat here...

Dont skimp on the TM, get the biggest one you can afford.  I have 2 on my 14'.  A 12V (42lbs?) and a 24V on the back (60lbs?).  Wish I had a 24V in the front.

I own a Minn-Kota 40 lb thrust All-Terrain,and I can tell you,it's really all you need.Mine did fine on the "Bass Teched" jon that I owned, and it still does fine on my 16 ft. Terry glass boat.I do agree with bipr8.If you can afford the bigger thrust,by all means go for it.

GET THE BIG ELECTRIC MOTOR **If you are fishing electric lakes only**.

I live in NJ where 90% of my tournaments are Electric ONLY. In a larger lake, it will take me over 25 minutes to cross or get to a spot (and my boat is one of the faster ones). A slower boat may take 50 minutes and would be limited to staying close to dock.

My biggest advice is to get the widest jon boat you can afford.  That is where your stability comes in after you put in all of your modifications ie front deck etc etc.  Since wide jon boat is the first and single most important criteria the second would be to get the longest you can afford as well.  Both of these will give you more room and stability and not to mention safeness.  I have heard of several boats that have sunk in our bigger electric only lakes due to nasty weather/waves.

Here is a picture of my boat from start to not quite finished :)
