Tackle Storage and Kayak Fishing

Hey folks! Who here fishes out of a kayak? I have been for a year now, and it is a total blast! I'd like to know how much tackle you bring with you on the water? I, for right now, fish soft plastics 90% of the time, therefore I've got bags and bags of baits that I carry with me. I am new to bass fishing, without buying any storage devices, I just threw my bags of rubbers into a ziplock freezer bag....which turned into 2 freezer bags, and the 3....ect... 

How much tackle are you guys bringing with you? And how do you store it? I don't need to be perfectly organized, but I've got to do something because I waste a lot of time digging through my freezer bags looking for stuff. Can anyone post a photo of their tackle storage systems? And maybe even their kayak layout with tackle staged to go fishing? I am getting ready to go out now. I'll take a photo of my boat and post it here just for laughs. Thanks!

I have a smaller Cabela's bag that I keep a few 3600 or smaller Planos and my plastics in. It sits on top of my rod pod near my feet. I'd like to keep it in the space behind me but there's usually 70 pounds of Golden Retriever occupying that area so I work with what I have left.

I use a crate and have it full with various sized plano boxes.  I then keep a few bags of plastics up under my seat/foot area.  The crate is stored in my tank well area behind my seat.

I have a crate in the back tankwell. On a typical all day largemouth trip I have three waterproof planos, a couple of smaller terminal tackle planos, and 3 "gallon size" zip lock bags for soft plastics. I organize the zip locks by plastic type (worms, craws, beavers, etc.). If I have other presentations that I think I "might" need, they go out of the way into the front hatch.

i have a crate with several plano 3700 boxes with various hard baits, soft plastics and terminal tackle. I'm usually guilty of carrying much more that i need.

I have a crate behind my seat that I can fit six 3700 size plano boxes if I want. I don't always bring that many but it allows me to have the option of not cutting down just to save space.

Thanks for the replies. I have a crate that I keep in the back too, but I only keep things in there that I don't reach for often because it is difficult to get anything in/out of it while sitting in the cockpit. I guess I'm gonna have no choice. I would prefer something a but more accessible, but I have and OK Trident, and if you've ever seen one, their cockpit layout is a joke. There is no room for anything, unless you don't mind having a pile of stuff in your lap and piled higher than the gunnels.

I've waxed and, now, waned on my tackle carrying... I started minimalist, then went to a full-blown crate with multiple boxes in the well of my Ride 115.  This year, I decided to get down to one tackle box that I could just grab and go with - whether hitting the water in the boat or the bank.

This is what I currently carry...:

"Column" 1: Swimbaits/Flukes, Small aberdeens, spinners (2), scent, split-shot

"Column" 2: Worm hooks, worm/drop weights, swimbait hooks, topwater frogs (buzz and hollow), misc cranks, drop-shot hooks

"Column" 3:  Senkos and Ikas, both in 3 colors (Grn Pump, Drk Pump, Blck/Blue)... I keep backstock of all these and replenish the numbers in the tacklebox every so often.

"Column" 4:  Flappin' Hogs and one bag of Bugs, 3/8os Siebert brush jigs (Blck/Blue, Brown/Org & Sweet Craw, Bluegill)

 

So far, this seems to be the right balance of having everything I could want with me while being minimalist enough to be portable and force me to fish what I have.

 

I should add:  I take 2-3 rods... 7'M and MH spinning (with 6 and 10lb mono, respectively) and 6'UL spinning (4lb). I either carry them laying in the footwells between my legs or in rodholders I mounted to the milkcrate. My plan now is to use the freed up space in the tankwell milkcrate for other stuff like food, water, camping gear, etc.

Hardbaits, jigs, and terminal tackle I select ahead of time and sort into 4-5 plano 3500 boxes, which get stowed in a hatch in front of the seat. For plastics, I just toss them in a dufflebag and put it in crate behind my seat. Although, I find I don't dig out tackle or switch baits as often as I used to after adding enough rod holders to carry 5-6 rods at a time. I almost certainly don't bring as much tackle as a lot of folks. But still, I could absolutely bring a lot less without affecting my fishing; the only question is, am I going to do that? Signs point to "no."

I pretty much ONLY fish out of kayak.

I use a YakAttack black pack box in the rear of my Wilderness boat.

Inside I take smaller plano boxes with Terminal, Jerkbaits, jigs, spinner baits, cranks and topwater.

Throw in whatever bags of soft plastics I think Ill be using and Im off.

Also mounted 6 of their rod holder tubes to the box as well, so it works as its own rod storage while on the water.

Lost some stuff when I flipped for the first time yesterday....will put more thought into securing things with the replacement gear.  I had 3700's set in crate, but not secured inside it.  Made it easy to access, but I can still picture the boxes floating down the river as I struggled to keep the rods and paddle.

I haven't tipped on mine (knock on wood), but what I did with my crate is attach some bungie chord on top so that I can hook it across the 3700 boxes, so that if I flipped they wouldn't fall out of the box. I also have the crate itself attached to the kayak with bungie, and I have bungie near my rod holders that I can wrap around my rod handles to secure them too.

I've run the gamut of how to store my baits
about, oh...heck, too many times to remember.

Currently, I'm using an older Plano guide box
with my most used plastics in the top (also use
plastics most of the time). In the big main section
I've got other plastics, in bags, that I use less,
three spools of line, a small box of all my most-used
hooks, weights, some spinnerbaits, crappie jigs, and
so on.

This has been my most efficient setup to date.
I.e., the one I've used the longest. This goes from
using a large box filled with gallon ziploc bags
of technique specific baits, to Plano boxes of the
same thing, to other methods.
