Jawbone frog warning!

I finally got a hit on my frog and the d**n bass knocked it silly, it was all jacked out of shape and the fight pulled the weight out, I did not catch my first bass on a frog but I did manage to get one to hit it and retrieve my damaged frog.

Now I need to replace my weightless frog due to big hole where the weight was, I don't think I can fix it.

I picked up the lower priced frog because all I have is a medium rod with a spinning reel and 10 pound line so I figured it was better to avoid the $6 to $15 frogs due to risk of loosing it. (I will be getting a bait caster with heavy rod in month or so I just gotta get by with this for now)

Anyone know of an affordable frog that won't come apart?

Some of the small Scum Frogs are only $2.99 on TW.  Usually hollow body frogs are quite durable. I have a couple of them I've been tossing for a couple of years. They're a way better bargain than going through pack after pack of senkos. Also, if you're going to use a light rod with frogs, you ought to at least put some heavier braid line on to enable a firm hookset.

The Live Target hollow body frog is very affordable if you take into consideration how many bass you can catch on one of these lures.

Scum frogs are probably your best bet. I personally don't like them because they are on the lighter side and I can't cast them as far, but with lighter spinning gear they should do fine. Although a medium rod is definitely not my first choice for frogging, but it sounds to me you don't have the option to use another at the moment. Just make sure your hooks are sharp.

The small Booyah pad crasher. Cheap, durable, and effective. I skip them under docks/overhanging cover on M spinning gear with 20lb braid when they are slapping at the regular sized frog and not taking it. I have caught multiple 5+ lb fish over the years by "finesse frogging" It's not my favorite thing to do, but I do what I have to, to get bites on any given day.

BTW............I can NOT recommend the small Spro Popping frog. They are made of tissue paper, and cost twice as much as the booyah. I bought a bunch of them when they first came out a few years ago, and none of them lasted more than 2-3 fish before the weight fell out of the belly, or they just plain ripped up too bad to use.

I'd go Booyah, they make some great frogs and they don't cost a lot.

BOOYAH!!! They last a good while. I've worn one out, but it caught a lot of fish. I bought an H2O frog from Academy and not impressed with the ability to walk it or the material it's made of. It seems like the old Spro frog made of harder rubber and a flat body.

Is a plastic frog out of the question?  The Z-man popping frogs have great action and I had a huge snapper grab one and start a 4 min tug of war with me over it.  When he spit it the hook was bent but the frog was still in great shape.  I think they are like $4-5 for a 4 pack.

Get a spinning reel that can handle braid like a Pflueger President (size 30), spool on some 30lb braid (8lb mono equivalent so don't worry) and get yourself a Spro Bronzeye 65 Frog from TW for $8.99!!!

agree with the above posters.  i'd throw it on braid like either 15 or 20lb on that spinning rod and the booyah pad crasher JR is a great frog and not as pricey as others.  

also when you go to get that casting rod, maybe reconsider a MH rod in the 7' range.  That's what i fish my frogs on and that MH will be much more versatile than the Heavy rod will be.

Once you get a casting rod like buzzed bait said I'd up the ante and get a Spro King Daddy frog (weighs a full 1 oz.) @ $11.49 through TW to catch the really big boys/girls!

Medium spinning rod with 10lb (I'm guessing mono)?  Throw something besides a frog.  When you get a baitcaster with a heavy rod, spool it up with AT LEAST 30 lb braid and put a 5/8 oz Scumfrog trophy series on it and cast into the gnarliest crap you can find.  

 

If money is an issue, get the 7:1 BPS Pro Qualifier and mount it on a 7' MH Extreme Rod.  It's what I use and makes a GREAT froggin combo.  Those extreme Rods are like fishing with an axe handle.  They'll horse a big girl out of anything.

Always Super glue the weights on cheaper frogs. The Jawbone frogs are decent, I think that is what is in the Basses mouth in the picture I have on my profile, they have 2 generations, some really fall apart, some are decent, but other than the weight and nose being un sealed, they are great for $2 when on sale 5/10 at dicks mix and match with Yum and Havoc.

Don't by the Rat. It is the same as the .50 Chinese Ebay rats, hooks are Junk, It is just junk and if it gets smashed by a large Bass, you will be mad when it rips the bait apart and you lose the fish.

I use these frogs when I am fishing areas where I am losing baits in trees and can't go in to get them, so they surve a purpose, loc tite gel will fix any frog and I glue all weights in. But if you are using them in standard spots, spend your money on a Booyah frog which is often $4 and is pound for pound maybe the best frog. It will catch fish and hold up well, plus they have 2 sizes, poppin, all good. 

Strike King is a good frog for the money, Scum Frogs especially Trophy are way under priced with Owner Hooks and brass weights, colors, different designs, texture, they make a killer line up. Ebay has the Scum Frog rats 3/10 free shipping. I would suggest trying a rat, they work really good, and the older Scum frog or Snagproof (I forget) is every bit as good as the LT. Better hook ups. Less Junk in the trunk to get in the way....

Make sure when sealing frogs that they are not completely sealed or they wont collapse, nose and weight will usually be good as air comes out of legs, or just poke a hole in back with a hook for a drain. That is important.
