Modifying your boat's Rod Locker?

Anyone ever do it? I saw this video and would like to do it on my own but I researched it and no one says what tools you need or exactly how they did it. The below guy basically shows the before and after but didn't show him cutting the holes, how he cut them, or what tools he used. I need to enlarge or add new rod tubes because my spinning rod's eyes are too big to go into the current holders. 

If you've done this, like below, added rod holes and tubes, how did you do it and what tools did you use?

 

Note: I want to keep the rod organizer in there. I do not need more capacity. I just want to make space for 2 spinning rods since the rod holders are too narrow for the spinning rod's eyes. If all of the current rod holders were larger, I wouldn't need to do anything. If possible I could just cut 2 of the rod holders larger and add larger tubes. I don't own a ton of rods and don't plan too, I only use like 4 baitcasting and 2 spinning rods. 

 

I do use the rod sleeves in conjunction with the rod holders now.

The pipe he used is 1''1/2 tail pipe that drops down from a S-trap or P-trap in your kitchen sink. He would have used a 1''1/2 hole saw to drill the holes. The tail pipe has a flange on it that he butted up against the holes he drilled.

Chances are he also used a bit of glue on the backside of the flange to hold them in place. He also taped them to the original tubes. He happens to live pretty close to me and belongs to the local bass club.  I see him at some bass tourneys once in a while.

Not saying that isn't pretty and it probably gives a little bit more protection to the reels and rods. But I just use the rod gloves on my rods and they go in and out like butter. Oh and have tons more room for more rods. My boat is a 2000 model and the rod lockers back then went exactly huge like boats today.

Do you know how he cut the holes?

I am sure he used a hole saw.  That is what i would use

Do yourself a favor.  Throw all that tube crap in the trash and get you enough of these to do what you want.

The sleeves will not go all the way to the bow and you will still have tips to get tangled up in the bow and will break one, always on your best rod when you do. 

Taking those things out was one of the best things I've done to my boat, other than repair the motor so it would run when I bought it. 

My boat has rod lockers on both sides but I only use one for rods so I need it to hold more than a handful of rods.  I can easily put a dozen in the one side and not have any problems getting them in and out using just the rod gloves.

I agree, get some rod gloves and take the organizers out. You'll have much more capacity.

Thx guys. I did change the OP. I should have specified that I don't necessarily need more capacity and that I just want 2 larger rod tubes for my spinning rods which have bigger eyes.

If you do stick with the tubes, get the rod gloves anyway or you will hang the tips up in the bow.  Been there, done that too many times.  After breaking a G-Loomis and a ST Croix in the same week from tips getting hung together, the tubes came out and will never go back in, unless the next owner wants to put them in.

I decided if I was going to have to use rod gloves anyway, why bother with the tubes.   Mines a dual console and with the console and windshield in the way sliding them out of the tubes, it's actually easier getting them out after taking the tubes out.

Yeah, I already have the rod sleeves which I use with the rod organizer. 

I'll look into the hole saw and P-trap.

Your not looking for a P-trap it's The Tail Pipe for a P-trap. They come in different lengths.

What type of glue? 

 

Would RTV silicone work?

I think if you look close he did not glue them. But silicone would work. If it was me I would trash the hole thing and have a more usable rod locker.
