IgotWood Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 Please pardon the wetness behind my ears. What is the difference between an EWG and a standard offset worm hook? Aesthetically, I see the difference. But what do you use them for? How do you determine which style hook for your baits? Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 7, 2016 Super User Posted August 7, 2016 There is less gap in an ewg than a standard hook . I only use EWG's on fat baits . As long as the " gape "is twice the thickness of the bait I will use it . I define and may very well be be wrong , gape is the distance from point to shank and gap the distance from eye to point . I feel I get better hookups with a standard hook when using a skinny bait like a Jelly Worm . 1 Quote
doyle8218 Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 I use both and find no difference in hook sets with either. 2 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 8, 2016 Global Moderator Posted August 8, 2016 I use primarily the wide gap hooks because it allows me to skin hook my baits and allow for easier hooksets. The wide gap hooks are also a must for rigging thicker baits. 2 Quote
crypt Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 fat baits get EWG's and skinny or finesse baits get a more standard gap. Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 9, 2016 Super User Posted August 9, 2016 Gap is measured from the hook point to the base of the hook bend. EWG means extra wide gap and nothing to do with hook length. Tom 1 Quote
SwampLife Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I fish with 4/0 Gammy offset round bend 90% of the time !!! if I'm punching it's a 5/0 hack attack straight shank... To fish a ewg the body has to be fatter than any beaver style or craw bait that I use .. Or maybe my hook set is stronger??? Never had problem with a offset hook no matter if it's a curly tail worm, pit boss, sweet beaver, rage bug etc... Quote
