Super User Nitrofreak Posted August 7, 2016 Super User Posted August 7, 2016 Quality over quantity is what I fish for as well, however, I usually leave it up to my co-angler or co-anglers as to what their preference is, most of the time it's either family or a veteran, both like to fish for quantity but on occasion I will have one say lets go find some big-un's. Not too many have the patience to wait out a good bite when needed, my girls especially. Quote

Failing that, I prefer to catch a few big fish along with a lot of smaller ones. Failing that, I prefer to catch just a few bigger fish over more fish that are all small ones. Failing that, I prefer to catch a lot of little ones over just a few little ones. Failing that, I prefer to catch just a few little ones over nothing. Failing that, I prefer to be out on the water anyway instead of staying home. I like to catch fish, too. I only get to fish about twice a month. Somehow I've never been able to see the specific sized fish I want and put a lure, that it will eat, in front of it's face, so, I'm glad for anything that bites. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted August 7, 2016 Global Moderator Posted August 7, 2016 I prefer to catch a few bigger fish than a bunch of dinks. Unfortunately, our lakes produce very few of those larger fish, so dinks are often what I'm stuck with. 3 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 7, 2016 Super User Posted August 7, 2016 I do both . Id rather catch 50 bass with two big ones thrown in than just two big ones . With numbers comes size . 3 Quote
OCdockskipper Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 While I enjoy the process of fishing, from purchasing & setting up gear to launching for the day and trying to figure out where the fish are, I enjoy catching more than fishing. I target keeper sized fish and above, I don't consider a legal fish a dink. On any particular day, I'll adjust my methods to those that are producing bigger fish, but if the choice is between 50 legal fish or 1 eight pounder for 10 hours fishing, I'll take the former. The eight pounder gives a great memory, but if it is the only action for the day, there are 9 hours and 55 minutes of boredom built in. Real world is that on some lakes, this isn't that black and white choice. i caught two bass over 8 lbs last month (July) on my home lake, one on a TRD Ned rig the other on a 6" Zoom Dead ringer. Neither of those are baits used by those who target large fish only. On those two days where the big ones were caught, we ended up catching 60 fish and 38 fish respectively, so we had the best of both worlds. 2 Quote
Airman4754 Posted August 7, 2016 Posted August 7, 2016 I go to where I think there are good fish and do my best to catch as many as I can. If that ends up with a few toads that's great, if it's a bunch of dinks that works too. 2 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted August 7, 2016 Super User Posted August 7, 2016 Those who say they fish for one or two bites are just making an excuse for not being able to catch fish . just kidding , just kidding . Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted August 8, 2016 Super User Posted August 8, 2016 When I get out on the water what usually happens is that I catch a bunch of little ones, and one or two scale worthy bass. I like to have a mix of numbers and size on each trip. 1 Quote
frogflogger Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Larry Dahlberg made a remark on one of his shows that mirrors my present feelings and the approach my old mentor took years ago. First you want to catch a fish, then you want numbers, then you want to catch a big fish, then you want to catch a lot of big fish - but years into it some of us just want to catch fish our way, usually with some crazy lure/technique we've put together. 1 Quote
Super User Sam Posted August 8, 2016 Super User Posted August 8, 2016 CityBoy, when tournament fishing I go for five keepers and then go for the big ladies. When fishing for fun I go for the number, not the size. Catching the big ones is always a treat but catching a lot of LMB is also tantalizing. Most LMB I have caught on one outing was 62. None over 2.5 pounds and I had a blast landing everyone. 1 Quote
Dreadhead47 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 I prefer fishing for bigger fish when I am out. However when I am trying a new technique and trying gain confidence, I am happy with a lot of average or even smaller fish. Quote

Fully agree with this! It's like the different phases you'll go through as an angler. Quote
Josh Smith Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Used to be numbers mattered, 20+ years back. Up til last year, it was size. Now it's just getting out and enjoying nature. Fishing is a bonus. Josh 2 Quote
"hamma" Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 Seeing as I dont get to go as much as Id like,...I just want to be out there nowadays. But I do get a kick out of catching them on a lure I've made. Used to be,... the first fish is a bonus, but then you want another, then, a big one, then another big one, and so on. I believe everyone comes to this crossroad eventually. When I was tourney angler I wanted a limit of quality fish every outing. but now? I just want to fish, whether I catch fish or not is no big deal anymore, (I've caught enough) but I do strive to make sure that any other person on my boat catches something of some quality. Quote

I fully agree with this statement. When I started bass fishing I just wanted to catch a bass, didn't matter it's size. Later on I wanted to catch as many bass as possible. A while after that I only wanted to catch big bass and didn't care how I caught them. Now I am catching big bass the way I want to,with specific lure presentations and working on breaking all my bass fishing pb's.The amount of time it will take to break each pb means nothing to me and the reward of breaking old pb's is worth all the effort. blckshirt98 Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I'm still relatively new to bass fishing so I'm still perfectly happy fishing for numbers. I'd rather fish for numbers and hope 1-2 nice ones find their way into the mix. Now if I were in a situation where I've been fishing for 20 years, maybe the numbers won't matter as much to me as the challenge of catching big fish each time out. But for now, give me numbers! YoTone Posted August 9, 2016 Posted August 9, 2016 I have this decision every lunch hour. i have a pond thats a guarantee that i get hooked up, but they are always less than a pound. i dont visit that place much but when i do its a blast, especially now im getting more comfortable with using frogs. its also good to get that skunk off the back and after that i can resume fishing better bodies of water in hopes of bigger bass. Super User roadwarrior Posted August 9, 2016 Super User Posted August 9, 2016 Last week I fished three days and got -0- bites on days 1 and 2. On day 3, 3 bites and two hook-ups/ landing. The big fish was 31" and 10 1/2 lbs (brown trout). That was ALL I was looking for. 4 Quote
