Travis Gasper Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Pflueger President combo. Can't go wrong for $75. I used it for 3 or 4 years before I got quite serious about bass fishing. I still use it occasionally, but that would be my loaner setup. 1 Quote
WPCfishing Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 No loaners on my boat... To many mishaps. Bring your own or stay home. 2 Quote
Turkey sandwich Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 This is why I bought my dad a St Croix Premier (I believe... Maybe Triumph, in either case an SCII MHF rod), put a Pflueger President on it, and spooled it with 20lb 832 for Father's Day. I tied a leader and attached a non ridiculous sized snap on the end of it so he wouldn't tie on a size 00 snap swivel. Best investment ever. Substantially better than the cheap combos he owns and he now regularly catches fish. I also keep a 7'Med Fast Premier/Sedona combo I've had for forever around as an extra spinning set up and loaner stick. I've been introducing more friends to fishing over the past few years, and it's been reliable, idiot proof, and not as cringe inducing as watching someone bend an Avid X in half. That rod has been a gamer. Quote
Allen Der Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 fenwick silverhawk with pflueger president spooled with 20lb braid. Quote
Super User fishwizzard Posted August 8, 2016 Super User Posted August 8, 2016 I have a two-piece 7' StCroix Premier ML-F spinning rod I stick an Okuma 3000 reel on. It's loade with 15lb braid and gets a 5' floro leader. I tend to give my non-fishing friends something simple, like a Ned, inline spinner, or small paddle tail and the rod handles all of them well. Being a two part rod, I don't worry about the tip, as I can just replace the upper section. Quote

Three inexpensive spinning combos. Two of which are mediums- one with braid and one with 8lb CXX. The third is a MH with 30# braid. All basic bases = covered. They can choose whatever they want or all of them, whatever floats their boat! I would keep it under $80 or so for a starter combo. I spend $20 on a Shimano Sienna and was really surprised how nice it is. Pair one with your ideal action in an Ugly Stick Elite or similar and you're out the door for under a hundred with a spool of line. Don't doubt the Sienna Quote
Sherlock 60 Posted August 8, 2016 Posted August 8, 2016 For guests and family I have 3 spinning combos: 2 Mitchell Avocet combos and an old BPS Bionic Blade rod with a 10 year old Symetre 2000 reel. For the real beginners I have a couple of old Galyan's baitcasting rods with Abu spincasting reels attached. They generally don't get to touch my personal gear. Except, of course, for my wife, who uses my good spinning gear occasionally. Quote
bigfruits Posted August 10, 2016 Posted August 10, 2016 I let them use my rods, I can only use one at a time. I rather have them break a GLX or NRX rod that I can have replaced for $100 than a $150 dollar rod with no replacement service. Quote
S. Sass Posted August 11, 2016 Posted August 11, 2016 If I have to share with a noob they get a Shakespeare 35 on a Shakespeare Ugly Stik 6' Med. Its the only Ugly Stik I have and its old but does OK on Perch and Crappie. Like many others here I don't go fishing with people that don't know how and have the basics like their own rod n reel. Its not that I am trying to be rude but I really don't have anyone like grand kids or what not that are around for this to be a issue. Quote

Airman4754 Posted August 12, 2016 Posted August 12, 2016 I let them use my gear. I have the same deal with everyone. They pay for gas and can use the entire arsenal of gear and tackle, which is basically endless. Quote
