Your "Loaner" Setup

So, you are taking someone fishing with you that is visiting from out of town or for some reason does not have any of their own tackle. Do you have a designated "Loaner" setup? Of course there are some people you would let use anything in your boat...a family member, close friend, responsible experience fisherman, etc. I am just talking about your average buddy, with average fishing experience. The thought of a buddy blasting the tip of a NRX off of my engine cowling is enough to make me cringe. At the same time, I would want to put something in their hands that is enjoyable to fish with...something that is probably nicer than anything an average joe fisherman would have used. I don't really have anything right now that I would feel real thrilled about handing over. As I have bought nicer stuff, I have given away quite a few...to the point where my "worst" spinning setup is a Stradic FK on a GLX. So, I am thinking about picking something up I would be more comfortable loaning out and also not mind using myself if the occasion arose. 

So, if you have a go to "Loaner" setup, what is it?

My loaner set up is a 7' MF Berkley Cherrywood HD with a Shimano Sedona 2500 spooled with 20lb PowerPro and a 6' 15lb Berkley Big Game leader. 1/0 Gamakatsu Finesse Wide Gap hook with the barb crushed rigged with a wacky 5" Watermelon Senko. If you're a newbie fisherman, that's all you get on my boat. 

I bought the rod and reel specifically for newbies I take fishing because I feel better about letting someone use it than one of my actual setups. That being said, it rarely gets used because I absolutely hate taking non-fishermen fishing with me.

My Loaner Set up is an Abu Garcia Black Max Combo. Nothing is more entertaining than watching a newbie try to cast a bait caster.

If they are comfortable with a casting set up, I throw them a Black Ma Combo. If not, they get a Pflueger President Combo.

My loaner combo are some 2 piece rods one a Shimano Zirca and the other An Okuma combo.  Both spinning combos, in general I don't loan out my baitcaster combo.  If I had too I'd lend them a bc combo I'd be ok lending the Fenwick Eagle or the Veritas paired with a PQ.

For those needing a spinning rod, I'd suggest a President and your favorite $100 rod such as an HMG or Okuma EVX.  A little cheaper rod, maybe a No.8 or an E-Motion.  For those liking a baitcast reel, a Tournament MB dual brake reel at just under $110 from ebay mounted on one of the Fenwick Aetos rods currently on sale on the Fenwick website for $126 would make an awesome loaner and one you probably would enjoy using as well.  For a little less a Tatula with an HMG or EVX would also be pretty nice or even a No.8.

A few guys on here have good things to say about the Dobyns Fury and Powell Inferno.

 

EDIT:  Aetos currently at $95.  Wow!  Was going after one, but funds gone.

i don't really have one, but it'd be my lightning shock and pflueger trion that i use on the river.  

if you wanted to get something you'd like to use as well, i'd look really hard at the daiwa tatula (the original, not the XT) on sale for like $110 at a lot of places right now.  since it's a loaner and there's a good chance a casting reel may not be the best for a newer fisherman, i'd probably make it a spinning combo.  add a pflueger supreme on to the tatula and you've got a great combo that i'd fish myself and have no issues loaning out.

My kid's rods are my loaner setups.  Three inexpensive spinning combos.  Two of which are mediums- one with braid and one with 8lb CXX.  The third is a MH with 30# braid.  All basic bases = covered.  They can choose whatever they want or all of them, whatever floats their boat!  

I would keep it under $80 or so for a starter combo.  I spend $20 on a Shimano Sienna and was really surprised how nice it is.  Pair one with your ideal action in an Ugly Stick Elite or similar and you're out the door for under a hundred with a spool of line.

I usually give them a short durable rod like a 6ft MH Ugly Stick. They can abuse it all day long and the rod will take it. I won't worry about them high sticking, so they can fish without me trying to correct their technique to save a $300+ rod tip from exploding. Its win win for everyone.

A Pflueger President on a 7' BPS Tourny Special Rod. I use the combo myself when I am alone but it's easy to teach someone to use a spinning setup fairly quickly, and it's hard for them to mess it up like on a baitcaster. Plus an errant cast that damaged the rod wouldn't be a huge blow.

I would definitely start with a 30 or 35 sized Pflueger President and I would put it on a 6 foot 6 inch Berkley Lightning Shock rod.  My wife fishes 1 Irod for frogs 3 G Loomis spinning rod for bottom contact baits and for cranks and traps one Berkley Lightning Shock rod. For the money it is a great rod. We use it for big stripers as well. The other rod I would suggest would be a 6'6" medium action Abu Garcia Veritas spinning rod. Often they can be found on sale for around $75 bucks. Both of these rods would feel good enough to use yourself if you wanted a spare with you for a day.

Anything that would double as a pond beater outfit. Sub $100 rods and reels that function fine but may not look pretty. 

Now if it someone I know and trust I would let them use whatever as long as they didn't abuse it.

My GF gets to use my GLX spinning rod with Stradic CI4+ reel.  I let my son use it one time.  He didn't break it but was very careless with it and he isn't allowed to touch it anymore!   I bought him a spinning rod and both of us are much happier about the situation.

My loaner is a Gander Mountain GSX spinning rod (no longer made but a great rod!) with an Abu Orra S reel (older black/red model).

This issue come up every year when I go to fish the Fishing for Freedom project that the Leavenworth Bass Club puts on at Truman Lake.  A couple of times I've been paired with a soldier who had NO experience using a rod & reel.   I figure that spinning reels are a little easier to learn on than bait casting gear, so I put together 4 rigs that cover any fishing situation that we might encounter that day.  All the reels are 2000 size Shimano reels spooled with braid and a fluorocarbon leader.   I've got a 7' Med action rod for cranks/ reaction baits,  a 7' MH Fenwick HMG for any soft plastics, a different 6'6" MH rod for lighter plastics and a 6' spinning rod for throwing at schools of white bass that we might encounter.

We start out learning how to cast and we generally have that down in an hour or so, then we tie on a Timber Tiger DC8 and go looking for fish.   The past few years it has been a relatively shallow bite where shad are stacked in the backs of coves

It's cheaper to drink, er I mean fish alone. I don't generally offer to take people whom don't have their own setups. Mainly because I don't have the patience to teach, or explain, or tie knots for other people.

Shimano Spirex 2000 on a 6'6" Med BPS Bionic Blade which seems to always have a Ned rig on it.  The rod has seen better days and has a bit of a curve to the tip but no one seems to mind.  My four year old nephew calls it our "guest rod".

I have an old shimano spinning combo that used to be used for casting light buck tails in the surf for bluefish.  It's a MHF that's 6' long and has a size 3500 reel, which is a little big, but allows for easy use of the controls on it.  I spoil it with 12 lb. mono and usually a t rig.  It's simple to learn and pretty much bulletproof

I would start them out with my favorite spinning rig and baitcaster, then rotate every other rig I carry. I don't own a "loaner" rod or reel.
