Whiskeytown is a very hard to fish lake.... Unless the water level is dropped the lake is very clear 99% off the time use clear water baits top water in the morning and evening... If you are living in Redding I would fish Shasta lake the spotted bass fishing is incredible there. Fish are biting very well in Shasta right now small swimbaits top waters tubes and drop shots are good bets there. I fish Trinity lake which I live right next to and fishing was incredible today landing 25+ bass in a few hrs all on a drop shot rig.... All in all my experience at wiskeytown has been its a hard lake to fish but glad you moved up here there are many great opportunity sand your not far from clear lake as well!!

I've fished Shasta. I've heard whiskey town is ruff but I also hear there are giants there lol

There are giants but they are very hard to catch!!! I've tried to catch them but I think the biggest I've ever caught was a pound.

Drop by Phil's Prop shop and ask what's going on where. There are some excellent big Smallmouth lakes within a hour drive from Redding that get very little fishing pressure.

Absolutely beautiful lake and often times has a lot of water in it when most CA lakes don't fill. If I was in your shoes I'd probably fish Whiskeytown as a change of pace and focus my efforts on Shasta and one of the SM lakes to the west or east referenced by Tom. The steelhead and salmon fishing can be fantastic on the Trinity and Klamath, and the flyfishing for trout on the upper/lower Sac is alleged to be the closest thing you can get to Alaska in CA. You're relocating to one heck of a year round fishing paradise... enjoy!

Sweet I'm a little nervous lol you know fishing is a huge part of your life when you are offered a job close to double your salary and the first question you ask is "how's the fishing"

I realize this thread is a little, well, old but Whiskeytown has turned into one of my favorite fishing spots.

There's almost nobody ever out there, it's just a couple minutes from town and you avoid a lot of tweaker issues by skipping on the local ponds.

There's decent fish in there too, here's a couple I pulled out this afternoon:

For anyone thinking of fishing Whiskeytown, it has been closed for at least the rest of the summer due to the Carr fire.

The lake is in the center of the fire zone, everything is burned to the ground for miles and it will be several years for the area to recover. Rain will come but the run off is very turbid with a tremdous amount of debris. So sad!

My partner and I passed through there on patrol a couple days ago. It's like something out of a horror movie.
