Rusty Pliers

How do you guys prevent rust on your fishing pliers? Right now I just go fishing with regular pliers and they got so rusty I can't even remove a gut hook anymore. When I get fishing pliers I assume they will rust too. How do you prevent that?

Oil regularly. I have a rusty pair of pliers and I spray them with WD40 3 times a year and they work fine. Or you could buy a pair of pliers that are aluminium. Never rust.

Some Fishing pliers have a coating which help prevent some rusting. I keep all my fishing tools (pliers, snips, scissors ect...) in a small box and throw a couple pieces of Flambeau blue tabs in there.

I'll use the wd-40 since I have some at home! I'll probably spray it once a month or so since I go fishing a lot. 

Is it a good idea to wash your pliers at home with tap water too after every fishing trip? If so I will do that too.

Get some fishing pliers.  More $$$ but you'll only buy them once.

Happened to me a few times..

Spend the 30-40 bucks for aluminum pliers.

Wont be disappointed.

Yup, the cheap rapala ones will do. But, they will rust out eventually. Great option if you dont fish a lot or down have $60+ to spend on pliers. But, if you are a diehard and going to be spending years fishing these are not only better, usually have integrated brain cutters, look better, but will save you money in the long run.

And, we all know how important it is to always have integrated brain cutters on hand.

I have had the same pliers (not aluminum) on the deck of my boat for 6 years.  Discolored, sure.  but rusty or hard to open?  not even the slightest.

Just make sure everything is dry at the end of the day and you should have no issue.

Yup. My Abel #4 pliers are 16 years old and still going strong.  Will never have to replace them.

Aluminum pliers with titanium cutters from Academy for $20, problem solved.

I use a product called Kroil it will penetrate better than anything I have ever used. keep it in the boat at all times,wipe it on all my tools helps prevent rust and keeps tools lubed.

I've done it two ways.....purchased a pair of high dollar stainless steel pliers, and purchased a pair of $1.86 pliers from Walmart and a small can of WD-40;  both work great!

All Stainless, no rust, ever. I've been carrying these for 15 years, and I don't know how I got along without them before.

Nothing is a better penetrating lube than Kroil. I use it on everything from my guns to my tractor collection.

 

If you do go the expensive plier route, put a giant bobber on that thing-my brother in law lost a new Leatherman fishing. Goodbye, eighty dollars.
