JoshM Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Hi I'm Josh from Illinois. I'd like to start fishing but I have literally no clue where to start. I've been watching fishing vloggers on Youtube who fish for small mouth and large mouth such as Jon B, APBassing, LunkersTV, etc. I'm hooked and I really wanna start trying to catch some fish. Problem is, I have no fishing experience and I'd like some tips/pointers/advice. Also, how can I convince my dad to start fishing with me? I've always wanted to fish since I was maybe 12(I'm now 16). His excuse is that you're not going to catch anything. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks guys Quote

BassOnKlinger Posted August 2, 2016 Posted August 2, 2016 Welcome to the board and welcome to the world of fishing! The articles linked on the bassresource.com site are great. The youtube vloggers are great too. Add Glenn (BassResource) and 1rod1reelfishing to your list. Maybe a good way to convince your dad to join you is to suggest that fishing isn't just about catching fish. It's about getting outdoors and enjoying nature, as well as enjoying spending time together. That's how I would approach it. For your gear: I'd get a used 7' medium heavy baitcasting rod/reel set up with some 10 pound flourocarbon line as well as a 7' medium spinning combo. Practice, practice, practice the methods involved with fishing these two outfits. Both can throw a large arsenal of lures. Don't get overwhelmed by all the information out there. And don't get discouraged if you don't catch fish every time out. Just enjoy yourself, enjoy being outside, and keep at it. You can't catch a fish without a line in the water, so get out there and have some fun! 2 Quote

itspj Posted August 6, 2016 Posted August 6, 2016 Welcome! As a newbie myself, I wouldn't start your dad off with a baitcaster. Unless you've got the affinity to go fishing, you're simply not going to practice learning how to cast your baitcaster and nothing is more frustrating than being out on your first time fishing and you're spending more time fixing birds nests than fishing (speaking from experience). Let's all be honest, no first timer ever gets bait casters right on their first use. So I would highly suggest for your dad, if you want him to enjoy himself and not be frustrated is to start with a spinning reel. Quote
