Swampfishing Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 I am in the military stationed in S.C., I grew up in VA. I had this boat for a few years now, but in VA there is no title for boats or anything like that. S.C. wants a title, so I am filing for a new titel/reg. has anyone ever done this and am I looking at a long process, with them checking to see if this boat has been stolling or what ever? I know it has not, but I don't want to wait months to put it in the water. It is just a little 11 foot john boat. Quote
Super User flechero Posted November 11, 2005 Super User Posted November 11, 2005 I'm sure the process varies by state. Texas isn't to bad, just some paperwork and money is all that's required. Check the SC fish and game dept. website, they probably have all the requirements listed. (Tx parks & wildlife dept has it all online, likely other states do too) Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted November 11, 2005 Super User Posted November 11, 2005 Swampfish- In California, you would petition the DMV for a copy of the title or change of title. If they run the VIN they should be able to tell if it has been reported stolen, previous owner, ect. By the way, am I mistaken that military personel don't have to register their vehicles in the state where they reside unless they wish to or discharge from the service? And thank you for your service. JB Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted November 11, 2005 Posted November 11, 2005 Here in MS,I bought a 14 ft. jon years ago.when I went to register,I couldn't even find a serial number on it(It was a very old boat). It was no problem they just issued me one.I don't know about SC,but I dought they'll get too worked up over a used jon boat.I wrote a note explaining my situation and they never even talked to me.Just sent me my registration card.I'd tell the game and fish officials just what you told us. Swampfishing Posted November 11, 2005 Author Posted November 11, 2005 Good deal, ya this boat has no Hull ID or S/N anywhere on it. As far as the military, SC requires you to register watercraft. And pay taxes on them, it is kinda BS if you ask me. Thanks again for the info, nothing ruins a day of fishing like the Game Warding taking your boat, so I need to keep it legal. Quote
alhuff Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 I would call Va and explain your situation and ask what paper work you need to get from the state of Va to get the boat legal in SC. Was this a boat that was used without a motor, just paddles? Alfred Quote
Swampfishing Posted November 14, 2005 Author Posted November 14, 2005 Ya, VA was just oars, I was a broke kid :-/ SC is sending me the forms to look over, after that I will know what kind of process I am looking for. I spoke with a few guys around here, and they said for a jon boat they don't really mind. Quote
