Is 17 lb Fluorocarbon too heavy to use for cranking?

Hey Guys,

I just bought a lews tournament mb for my cranking set up along with 17lb Seagaur Invizx Fluorocarbon. I've looked on a lot of forums and have seen varying opinions on what type of line to use as well as what pound test to use. I need your opinions on whether I should use the 17lb Fluorocarbon or purchase some new line.

Congrats on the nice reel. As for the line I've settled on 12# test Big Game mono. I'm sure others will get deeper etc but it was a great medium resolution for me. So yeah I think 17# is to much. But I'm just a guy that fishes I'm no expert.

InvisX is thinner per pound test that Most Monofilament equivalents.

17lb Seagaur Invizx Fluorocarbon is advertised at diameter of .015 inches -

12# test Big Game mono is advertised at a diameter of .014 inches.

So besides the difference in each line's properties & the price, that 100th of an inch in diameter might not make that much of a difference.

Nylon line diameters between .012 - .015 often make decent open water deep cranking lines.

Diameters of .016 inches & larger do well in more cover & / or shallow water cranking situations.

Good point I assumed 17 Fluoro might have larger diameter difference. Some do, but not Seagaur Invizx in particular.

Either way I still prefer the mono with treble hooks.

I fish a lot of InvizX, 10 and 12lb are my favorite for crankbaits and jerks.

For open water, 17 lb is overkill in my opinion; unless you are talking about some magnum deep-diving cranks. If you are fishing squarebills with that set-up and banging them around rocks or wood, I think 17 lb will serve you well.

I'll go up to 20 in heavy timber in lakes where the big ones live. For standard, everyday cranking, it's a bit bigger than I'd like but you can use it still.

We use 20lb exclusively south of the border ~ for everything - and I mean everything.

Works OK there.

I would suggest you try either 10 pound cxx moss green or 8 pound Halo  You will want to use some line conditioner on the cxx but both of those lines are built like steel.  I would keep the 17 pound line for flipping or jigs

8lb CXX covers all.

10 lb cxx is pretty close to 17 lb invizx. 

Good for square bills and traps. More than I'd use for something like a DT10.
