My son, my cousin and I were out fishing on 7/2 and we looked over and noticed something on the water. We couldn't figure out what it was at first. When my son, who was running the tm, got closer we realized it was a dog swimming. My son immediately wanted to rescue the dog but I was cautious. I've seen unfriendly dogs before and had bad experiences. Well, as we got even closer, we realized it was attempting to swim over to a pontoon full of party-goers. We yelled at the folks on the pontoon and asked if this was their dog. They said it was but made no move to come over and rescue the dog.

I have to explain that this dog was very far away from shore and still about 300 yards from the pontoon. As we pulled up closer, I realized the dog was just a puppy. Maybe a year old. The poor dog was whimpering and bobbing in the water and trying to get into our boat. I scooped him up and brought him into my boat. Next, we motored over and met the pontoon. The people on that pontoon didn't seem the least bit worried about the dog at all. They told my son to just "throw the dog over" when we were about 6-8 feet away from their pontoon. My son refused and he maneuvered us until we were about 2 feet away. He then handed the dog over. They were complaining about the dog and how it always tries to follow them etc. They were doing some bobber fishing but mostly drinking. I was so ticked that I couldn't even fish the rest of the evening. In hindsight, I should have just kept the cute little dog and told them to screw off.

What would you have done?

You cant do much about it but you did the right thing. Its insane how heartless some people are towards their dogs.

I wouldnt have started a fist fight just because I'm not that kind of a person but I definitely would have said something along the lines of "if you cant treat a dog like a loved one don't own one"

I would have had a new pup at home....

Myself included...  I love my dog and use to take her everywhere...  she's getting older now and can't do as much as she use to and breaks my heart when I go out fishing and know she wants to come along but her poor hips are starting to keep her from the joys she/we use to have..

My lab is my first born 1st of 5 kids..  (4 human 1 dog = SO much love)

300 feet or 300 yards?????!!!!?!?!?!

300 feet would be a bit far but for some breeds not really a big deal and something I may not have worried too much of with some dogs I know...300 yards of pure water ahead of a young dog is borderline abuse if shore was not near.

My dog gets 50 yards away and I would motor over- would be hard to see a dog at 300 yards if there is any chop to the water.

Unfortunately, legally if the OP would have keep the dog the owners could have had him arrested. Returning the dog was the right call but the next call should have been to an animal control officer or SPCA. Its sad that people treat pets this way but don't get yourself in legal trouble because of it. The ending of you taking the dog could have been the police arresting you for theft (grand theft depending on the breed and price, possible felony) and the pup would have been given back to the same *&% that threw it in the water in the first place. That's a lose/lose situation there. You did the right thing FrogFreak, even if it doesn't sound like it.

Stealing a dog in Virginia is a felony.

You did right in returning the dog.

You did wrong in not reporting them for drinking and animal abuse.
