You_Only_Live_Once_Fishing Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 what hooks are the cheapest and best? do you recommend gamakatsu round bend or ewg? can i change the hooks w/out split ring pliers? Quote
wisconsin heat Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I don't switch out all the trebles on my cranks. Only if they are looking bad/have been dulled from fishing. I found some Eagle Claw trebles at wally world that I like. Fletcher Shyrock EWG trebles. They are dang close to KVD's, If you put them side by side, I probably couldnt tell the difference. I think they are like 15 for bout 5 bucks. I might dig them up and post pics. 2 Quote
Airman4754 Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Cheapest and best aren't a real thing. I use Owner ST-56's. Anything Gammy, Owner, Mustad, or Trokar puts out will be good enough. Your rod action will do way more to keep the fish pinned than upgrading your hooks. Quote

I've been using these trebles for several months now and really like them on my squarebills and deep cranks. You can kind of see them on this bait and fish from January. Quote
Super User Oregon Native Posted July 20, 2016 Super User Posted July 20, 2016 For years I didn't use split ring pliers....now I have two pair. One for boat and one for home. In a word....Awesome. I like the narrow ones best. Finger nails thanked me...also quicker Quote
Fishinthefish Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 I do not use split ring pliers, I grab whatever tools I have laying around that I can open it a little with. Usually ends up being a tiny flat head. I also replace every single treble hook before I fish the lure with mustad treble hooks. Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted July 20, 2016 Super User Posted July 20, 2016 I generally replace when broken, bent, rusted, etc. However, I have gotten a few house brand (and off brand) lures with trebles that I didn't trust just by looking at them. I use split ring pliers and it makes the job MUCH easier than it was in the past. I yielded to the comments on here and bought Texas Split Ring Pliers last year and they really are far better than Mustad, and craft shop, pliers that I've had previously. I found some Eagle Claw trebles at wally world that I like. Fletcher Shyrock EWG trebles. Curious that these aren't avail at T W, since T W has a Shyrock gear page. I'll be on the look out for them elsewhere. Thanks. Quote
Nice_Bass Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 the Magic eye short shank by gammy. I usually only replace hooks on specific baits however the magic eye is the real deal and I do not need my split rings any longer. Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 Split ring pliers are a huge help swapping out trebles...after coming close to sticking myself with hooks trying to just pry the split ring open with fingers or a regular plier, the benefit of having the right tool for the job becomes very apparent. If you're looking for a good hook that isn't on the upper end of the price scale, try the Mustad KVD 1x Strong 2x Short Triple Grip, but get them in the 11 count packs from TW. I don't know why they sell 6 hook packs for $4.99, but 11 hook packs are only $1-3 more. 1 Quote
