ok, so I am using stren mono 12 lb. test on my bait caster, and been on there for the begining of the year. The line is curling, and getting wraped around my rod tip. So do I need to replace the line on this? still trying to figure this stuff out.

Thanks

Line curling is a very common thing ... especially with mono IMO.  I don't bother replacing the mono unless the curl is quite ridiculous and either causes backlashes or curls to the point like it's a slinky.   Since mono is so inexpensive I tend to err on the side of replacing it often.

Some lines have less memory than others, but it shouldn't effect your results. I spool new mono every few months.

Line "coil" is cause ya aint fishing enough!

If I don't go for a couple weeks I change it out!

Another vote for changing the line. Another thing would be to try some line conditioner. It helps quite a bit.

Tie on a heavy spoon or sinker and whip that sucker out there as far as you can about twenty times. Usually takes care of line memory. You could also try Berkley Trilene XL in 12lb. Hardly any line memory with XL.

Sounds more like line twist if it's wrapping itself around your rod tip.  Try cutting off whatever you have tied on.  Let out about thirty yards of line, close the bail and idle sccross the lake.  That will take out the majority of twist.

Try this once in a while Find a grassy patch somewhere you can work. Lean your rod against a tree or a car fender anything like that. This is done with no lure on the end. Click the real and walk the mono line out as far as you can. I take a piece of like terry cloth towel add some line conditioner and start from the rod end and pull hard on the line, keep adding conditioner and keep pulling hard to straighten the line while cleaning it.  Once I have done this several times, I will tie a heavy weight om the end of the line. As I reel in the line I will spray some conditioner on the reel then reel in a good bit more and repeat this until it is all reeled in. Now let it sit overnight. Go fish it and see if it is better.  I end up doing this to my P Line CXX copolymer several times a year. It does help.

I NEVER have experienced this with mono, and I never use swivels.  But it sounds like somehow you are getting the line heavily twisted.  Not sure what you're doing to cause that, other than maybe in-line spinners.  I suggest taking off the terminal tackle and let all the line off the reel while motoring down the lake.  Then start over and see if the problem is immediately solved.  If it's solved, but then comes back later, there is something causing heavy line twist.

And when putting the new line on make sure your doing it correctly. Thete is a wrong way. Or have a baitshop respool it for you.

Tie it to a tree, line condition it and walk it out and reel it in a couple times. It should help reduce the memory coil. We call that a slinky in my neck of the woods.

Moving to Georgia the 30th of this month just so I can do more of that ;). My wife thinks its because she wants to be closer to her family.

this. a little resistance on the line will take care of the coils. wether it be a weight tied on, casted out and reeled in a few times; or it be resistance from a lure like a crankbait or spinnerbait being reeled in, or and actual fish tugging on the other end of your line...

Some may frown on this but as long as it isn't done too often or too severely, I think it works fine:  Tie your line to a tree or post.  Walk about 30 yards and gently pull the line a few times to straighten it out.  Don't pull so hard that you stress the line, however.  Anyway, this will pull out most of the coil/memory.  NOTE:  This not a substitute for periodic replacement of line.  Sunshine, heat, stretching, nicks, contaminants, etc. will eventually degrade your line to where, if it isn't replaced, headaches and/or heartbreak is inevitable.

KVD L&L applied after every trip definitely reduces memory.  You do want a bit of memory, otherwise, the line would fly off the spool!

My advice would be to respool, treat with L&L, continuing with a couple spritz after each trip.
