willkurr Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I am fairly new to bass fishing, and am looking for a good spinning reel to use so I don't have to deal with my mistake push button reel. After doing my research, I found this spinning reel: Pfluger SUPSP40X Supreme Spinning Reel. Here are the details of the specific model: Quote Line Capacity: 10/230 Gear Ratio: 6.2:1 Braid Capacity: 14/280 Ball Bearings: 8+1 Max Drag: 14 Lbs. Recovery: 38.6" Per Turn Reel Weight (oz): 9.6 As the title implies, is this a good spinning reel (for bass fishing)? Quote
lakeannaangler Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I would recommend stepping down to a 30 or 35 size supreme. I have a 30 and I love it 3 Quote

Nathan Burton Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 Definitely a solid reel. As mentioned above, I recommend the 30 size. Quote
d-camarena Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I use 40 size reels for spinning, less line twist and ipt. Also can cast a lot further. But the weight makes the 40 reels not balance out great on most rod. For beggining definetely go with a 30 size. And that supreme is a great reel Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted July 19, 2016 Super User Posted July 19, 2016 Don't get the 40 size, it's way too big for your application. The 30 and 35 are what you need. Quote
Super User buzzed bait Posted July 19, 2016 Super User Posted July 19, 2016 agree with all above, very nice reel and the 30 or maybe 35 size is better suited for bass fishing Quote
Fishinthefish Posted July 19, 2016 Posted July 19, 2016 I wouldn't go above a 35 myself either, I made that mistake years ago. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted July 19, 2016 Super User Posted July 19, 2016 Yup, go with a 30 model. 35 if you like a bigger spinner. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 19, 2016 Super User Posted July 19, 2016 I have the supreme and like it a lot, I would also recommend the 30 size like others have said. Quote

Super User lmbfisherman Posted July 20, 2016 Super User Posted July 20, 2016 Another vote on stepping down on size. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 20, 2016 Super User Posted July 20, 2016 I like the whole line of Pfluegers. If you want to save a little money the Pflueger President is almost bulletproof. it is a step below the Supreme so I do not want anyone thinking I am against the better reel.. It is just that for the last 10 years my wife and I have fished a total of 7 Presidents and they have battle stripers, bass and big cats. After all of their use they are all just as smooth and work as good as new. Right now Dick Sporting Goods has a mail in rebate so after the rebate a President will cost around $50. 2 Quote

I actually prefer the President to the Supreme. I had issues with the sideplates loosening on the Supremes that resulted in damaged internals. Have had zero issues with the Presidents. The Supreme XT is terrific however. Quote
Onvacation Posted July 20, 2016 Posted July 20, 2016 My wife has a Supreme XT and loves it. We have 10 pound braid on it and I have to admit that fairly often, when the bit gets tough, I reach for hers which almost also has a Ned rig or wacky rigged worm, over my Stradic Ci4. Not that I don't love the Stradic but the Pflueger is on a nicer rod and does a great job off pulling in any bass we've run into so far. For the OP, ours is also a 30 size. Quote

I've never had that sideplate issue with my Supreme, but now i will be checking it just for due diligence. My Supreme has been excellent to me and so has my Trion. I just got two Presidents this year(a 35 size and a 40) but havent had much of a chance to fish them but they seem like excellent reels so far. I've never been dissappointed in any of my Pflueger spinning reels. They have great price points too, i would be hard pressed to be spending my money on other spinning reels as long as Pflueger continues to maintain their quality and excellence in spinning reels... Super User J Francho Posted July 21, 2016 Super User Posted July 21, 2016 The only time I like a 40 size reel is when I'm setting up a spinning frog/heavy cover rig. I'll use 40# braid, and mount it on a heavier power inshore rod. I've set quite a few people up with this, and it works great for that application, but general bass fishing, the 30/35 recommendation with 8# mono or 30# braid is good. Quote
frosty Posted July 21, 2016 Posted July 21, 2016 I use a Pflueger president limited edition and I love it. I wouldn't hesitate to get a Pflueger. Mine is a 40 with 20 pound braid. Quote
