When you start the retrieve the weight can be separate, the floating soft plastic a few inches away. If a bass strikes when the weight is separated the line moves freely improving strike detection. Ya ever try that in a swimming pool or real clear water with scuba gear on...I have & the separation 14-18" on the fall with a 1/4 oz weight.

The instant you apply pressure to start the retrieve that gape slams shut.

Unless you're stroking up off the bottom that distance does not reappear.
