Froggin Setup for under $350

Hey guys I need a good froggin setup for under $350, any ideas

I would agree on the Dobyns in any series but the Savvy is being replaced by the Sierra and I have already seen them. I am in love with them. Definitely a 735C. Let your wallet decide the right series.. The Fury costs $110, the Sierra is $179, a Champion XP costs $260.  If you pick the Sierra then that leaves you with $170 for a reel. Boy that $100 to $180 range includes a lot of good choices. For me I would shop online at Amazon. There are some real good deals on Diawa reels. I would be choosing between a  Diawa Tatula CT Type R, Tatula CT, Tatula Type R and a Tatula. My favorite is the regular Tatula Type R in a 8 -1 ratio.. That is exactly what I have on my frogging rod but I bought that way before the CT's came out. Mine of course is a left hand version.  That reel retails at most places for $200. On Amazon I can regularly get it for $130 from Sportsman Outfitters and so far I have had 3 good purchases from them. I am always careful who I buy from and if they have the same item at a good price for months and months then I feel like they are worth doing business with them. I will buy from them again so I can feel comfortable recommending them.

I love the Sierra! I was able to buy mine directly from dobyns. I spent at least an hour handling the different tapers and was able to purchase before they were released to tackle stores!

I am really lucky I live in Baltimore Md. We have a Bass Pro 20 minutes away and a Cabelas 1 hour away. What makes me lucky is an independant tackle shop opened up 15 minutes away from me. In order to thrive in this area the two owners have used their tournament knowledge and carry Dobyns, Powell, Irod, Cashion, Duckett, *** and some I am forgetting.. One owner fishes electric only reservoir tournaments and the other fishes the tidal Bay tournaments. So they have stocked that shop to the gills with the tackle from companies that serious anglers want and can not get at the two big box stores. They had the Sierra in over a week ago. I had a few in my hand and I  believe a Sierra 693 spinning rod is coming home with me soon. I guess I need another Symetre 3000. That darn bait monkey strikes again!

No doubt! It's just nice buying my rods directly from the guy who designed them. I think that's why I am such a die hard dobyns fan! 

You can walk in and talk to some one with the Dobyns last name and get the info strait from the horses mouth lol

Well I said I was lucky but not as lucky as you.for sure.  I think Dobyns and Powell have forced all the other rod manufacturers to step up their game in the $100 to $200 range.Interesting that they have a friendship and a past business history.

I believe Gary used to work for Powell. Also Dobyns had a limited "partnership" with lamiglas to help with there shipping. Dobyns rods in my opinion are superior to Powell primarily due to the incredible balance.

This rod and a Daiwa Tatula CT reel. I just put this set up together yesterday and it's awesome.

St. Croix Mojo Bass 7'4" H/F and you could pair it with various reels. If you were going budget reels I'd stick to something like a Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier or Revo S, but you've got lots of room to play in your budget.

Dobyns 735 Fury and Lew's BB1 Pro 8.0:1. I have the 735 in the Champion series for my frogging set up, the Fury is a fine rod as well.

He almost got it! The Fury 735 is great, but the savvy will be a bit faster. Try a Lew's SuperDuty, or a BB1 Pro if you plan on throwing different sized frogs.

Used orochii xx pitch perfect for 200 and a second hand nib curado for 150. Both on the forsale section. Never recommend anything I don't own.  You can guess what my froggin stick is.  Plus makes a great jig and bottom contact rod for heavier applications.

I'm using a 7' 3" H/F Ethos Micro with a 8.1 BPS Titanium 8 reel and have been very happy with it. My whole combo cost $180.

The Falcon Bucoo Amistad which is the 7'3" heavy is $99 and has a lifetime warranty makes a great frog rod.   Leaves a lot of money on the table for whatever reel you would like.

dobyns fury 735 lews tournament mb 8.3.1 or what ever the 8 speed reel is.  this is my setup.  i used to run all mojo and am slowly replacing them with dobyns due to its just a better all around rod and at a better price with a better warranty.  if you fish frogs like i do that betterwarranty is worth its weight in gold for your throw back rod.  im not sure how many i have broken due to it being under anchor cleats

Dobyns Champion 736 and a high-speed Shimano Citica. That's what I use, and I paid less than $350 for them.

Expensive is relative. A 109 dollar fury is nor expensive lol

To me these are working class utilitarian rods with a great warranty.

I throw toads June - Dec. I have 3 set ups.

1: Lews Lite HM85 7'2" Grass rod with a Lews  Team Lite reel. Smoken good in heavy pads, matts, reeds...

2: Aubu Ike 7'4" 6 power I use in lighter cover. Casting accurately is effortless. I paired it with a Lews Tourney MB. A fantastic reel by the way. Glass....

3: Team Diawa 6'6" MH for shorter casts around trees, docks, ect... I put a Lews Magnesium on it.

I also use my Lews Tourney Pro reels with all three rods. I won't part with those reels.

I want one more rod to complete my toad/frog arsenal. A Lews Lite HM85 7' Magnum for bomb casting the super thick stuff. Any of my Lews reels will do the rest. 

I recommend a Lews HM85 7'2" Grass rod with a Tournament Pro or MB reel.  You're looking at 300.00 + - depending on who you buy from.  Swanson's offers discounts some times. Check the better sellers on eBay too. Great deals occasionally. Use the Stanley Double Hooks on toads in heaven cover. I use Power Pro braid on all of my setups. Either 50 or 65. Limp lines like Super 8 or 832 are not great for frogs or toads. Good Luck..
