janalon Posted October 10, 2005 Posted October 10, 2005 Hi all, what a site. I do have a question if I may. Hating the hand pumps to fill my lower unit, is there a easier way? Why do you have to pump the oil up into the unit, is there a easier way to get the lube where it belongs? Quote
Ben Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 The proper way to fill the LU is to pump/squeeze the fluild into the bottom hole until it comes out the top hole. You don't have to pump it, normally it comes in a plastic tube or bottle with a tappered tip you can just stick in the hole and squeeze it in. Quote

Yankee_Bassman Posted October 11, 2005 Posted October 11, 2005 And half the lube ends up on the floor. nofolkinway: what's your secret for keeping it to only half with a squeeze tube?????? Personally, I find the pumps that attach to the bottles the greatest thing since sliced bread..... Quote
janalon Posted October 11, 2005 Author Posted October 11, 2005 That is my point exactly, the first time I tried to use a squeeze tube on my new nitro it was a total joke. I went through 2 quarts of oil and most of it lay on the ground. They gave me a free pump at the marina for my troubles. I was wondering perhaps if there was even a better way than the hand pumps. I saw an oil buddy device, looked as if you could put 3 gallons of oil in it. I was wondering if that might keeps my hands a little cleaner. Quote
Ben Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 I use a synthetic GL-5 that comes in the quart bottles off the parts store shelf. I have a pump I use just to add a little but since my gearcase hold 44 oz's it's quicker just to cut the tip out of the bottle and squeeze it in. I seldom have over a table spoonfull to drop on the ground. One thing is to put the top plug back in before releasing the squeeze, then release it with the tip still in the case. This will suck a small vaccum in the case so when you remove it, very little oil drains out before you get the next bottle in the hole. Remove the top plug again and finish filling, put the plug back in again before removing the bottle again. I don't buy the OEM oil because it's greatly over priced. I've been running a good grade Hypoid gear oil (GL-5) off the shelf for many years and have never had a lower unit failure. For the last ten of these years, these have all been fairly modified motors cranking out some rather impressive HP numbers. Current motor is a little over 300 hp. Oh! and I change mine twice a year. settle1 Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 janalon the reason you fill from the bottom is to push the air out of the top....the tubes are a joke ...pumps are the way to go Quote
janalon Posted October 15, 2005 Author Posted October 15, 2005 settle1 thanks, that is what I was looking for, why? To push air out of the unit. That makes sense, just something I never knew the WHY to. Quote
BassinFever Posted October 15, 2005 Posted October 15, 2005 Being somewhat of an oil freek over the years, here is my take. Over the counter "SYNTHETIC" gear lubes, (Any of them). will work just fine, but I like Amsoil. DO NOT USE Regular everyday standard automotive gear lubes though as they will foam too much. Also, a good tip: Go to you local auto parts store, I know NAPA has them, and buy a rubber air hose tip and addapt it to your pump, they don't leak a drop, then follow the above advice. Quote
janalon Posted October 16, 2005 Author Posted October 16, 2005 I think I will try the oil buddy, works like the pumps but holds a lot of oil. Quote
