Hooked by a Smallmouth ...

So ... it happend ... I got a hook lodged in me yesterday.  Was using a Sexy Dawg and got into a good SMB with it.  Got it to the kayak after playing it out.   It had all 3 trebles in it.  Since it was so tame I carefully lipped it on the side adjacent to the treble in it's mouth.  Well ... guess it was waiting for me because as soon as it was out of the water it slapped it's tail and somehow unhooked from it's lip and into my hand.   Worst part was getting the fish off while hooked so bad ... After that it was a cautious process to get it out and keep fishing.

I get home and the first thing which pops up on BR is Glen's video on fishing these things ... How'd I do coach ... LMAO.  

Timely. Just had to laugh ... 

What's been your worst experience getting hooked?

OUCH...well welcome to the club. You are not in the minority. Many of us have had a similar situation turn bad on us. Just glad you are ok. Keep fishing. My worst experience was not being hooked. I was trying to put a pork trailer (yea we used pork for trailers back then) on a spinner bait. I had a tough time getting the hook through the pork so I took a rusty knife out of my tackle box and tried to put a slit into the pork trailer. Well I think we can all see this coming. I slipped with the knife and cut my finger to the bone. A trip to the ER and 10 stitches later and I learned my lesson. I put the knife in my pocket and showed the ER doctor it when he asked what happened. To this day I can still see the look of total horror on his face and the extra large needle he brought out to sanitize the cut.

Chatterbait to my chin after my partner set the hook and missed. Bait came flying thru the air and hit me. I never knew it was coming. Ended up at the hospital to have it cut out, could not get it to move and was completely buried in my face.

I joined that club earlier this year. Pretty similar too. Smallie on top, but mine was a Whopper Plopper. I was wading in a river and it shook its head and I got one hook in the pad of my pinkie and another in the pad of my ring finger the point of the hook was just showing on its way out of my fingers. All the while I had about a 2 lb smallie thrashing on the other hook. I was by myself so I just grit my teeth and backed the hooks back out.

Been there....done that......still have the hook pieces in a specimen bottle as a "souvenir".  As someone else said....welcome to the club.

Man ~ I was going to give this a like but no one can actually like a chatterbait to Face - It even hurts to say it.

Honestly, there was no pain at all until the meds used to numb it so they could cut the hook out wore off. But they gave me good meds so it didn't hurt for long.....

My girlfriend is slowing getting into fishing and last weekend we went out and waded for smallies.  I had her wade in front so she would have a better chance to hit the fish fresh and unspooked.  On previous outings she was struggling with hook sets so I  was pushing her to be more aggressive and to embrace "when in doubt, set the hook". 

I swear to god I heard a small sonic boom as the first Ned rig flew back past my face that morning.  Once she started catching she picked up quick on how much/little force it takes but she still managed to hit me in the chest twice that day.  She is getting much better with casting accuracy so next trip I am going to walk up front, I think it will be safer.

It's been a long time since I've taken a hook (knock on wood), but I think it was my dad who was responsible for hitting me in the head with 3/4oz of lead last year at what felt like 300mph.  Luckily, I didn't get the business end, but it definitely sucked.  I guess burning super easily is a blessing in that I keep myself pretty well covered.

My buddy and I were fishing from a boat when we were teenagers, he made a nice sidearm cast that went right across the back of my head! It bent the eyelet on the rod and laid the back of my head open.

Luckily no hooks past the barb for me yet. I am super careful handling any fish hooked with treble hooks though.

I had a dog that was a mutt that loves chasing anything. Bank fishing with a buddy one day and he grabbed my buddies floating rapala while we were talking and it was just swinging back and forth from his rod tip. Dog got a hook in his lip and I jumped on him to try to keep him pawing at it and getting hooked worse. I had him between my legs with both hands around his snout when he put it in reverse hard and buried the front hook into the back of my index finger halfway between the first knuckle and my fingernail. So then I was connected to 70 pounds of panicking mutt who was doing anything he could to get away from me but having no luck. I had to tackle him and just lay down on top of him. Lucky for the dog, he'd pulled the single point through his lip so my buddy quickly clipped that hook point and he was free. I wasn't so lucky. The hook had suck as far as it could possible go into the middle of my finger and required an ER visit to get it removed and get my tetnus shot updated. I hope to never outdo that one.

first hook cut out of me was L&S jointed minnow in 1951 - since then I've learned other ways to get hooks out but - you fish you're going to get hooked

Now you know why I use a Boga while unhooking smallies from two & three treble hook baits. The one time I had a buddy just grab a smallie seconds latter my buddy had a hook embedded in his hand with a flopping smallie still attached. Worse thing is that smallies have more muscle mass than most other fish including largemouth which makes their flopping more intense in nature. Use a lip gripper to be safe when unhooking treble baits.

I got a treble in the back of my hand, under the ligament for my middle finger, with a thrashing fish digging it deeper. My brother and I tried cutting and pulling that sucker out, but it wasn't coming, it was stuck under the ligament. A trip to the ER with a Heddon torpedo attached to the back of my hand was interesting.

Probably won't be the last time. Over the years smallies have gotten me a few times also. Rattle Traps, DT's and Pop R's. Stings for a few days. You'll be ready for next weekend.
