I wonder how many people that claim  to have caught 8-10 pounders have actually held a bass this size in their hands.Fish of this size are usually 24-28" long and look more like a freshwater version of a grouper than a typical bass.

Lol

I had always figured I had caught 3 bass in the 8.5 to 9 pound range before I got a scale...then I caught a 9 pounder and realized I've only caught 1, and it wasn't from before I had a scale.

YOLOF, I think you have your answer! There are many fishermen who will insist that size fish is 7 or 8 pounds. Don't be that guy. It's a nice bass in most waters. Buy a decent scale and it won't take long and you will know within a few ounces what a fish weighs, before you weigh it. I will warn you that it will sting a bit when those 8 pounders only weigh 5, and some of your friends will not be happy with you. It will ultimately make you a better fisherman. Good luck.

NO, NO, NO  scale. In my mind, my PB can be whatever weight I want it to be. It all depends who I'm talking too and how many drinks I've had.  If I'd weighed it, I'd have to tell the truth. This way it isn't a lie because I don't know for sure how big it was.

This is another very popular approach. I've used it myself...

Exactly! ;)

Toledo Bend has a 14" minimum, I can tell you if it keeps before ya boat it!

Nice bass no doubt!

Exactly.  There is no greater memory than the first time you see a bass that size surface, mouth wide open, shaking their head to try & spit out your lure.

When it comes to bass fishing nothing compares to landing a huge bucketmouth bass!

Yes,weighing bass on a scale is quite the humbling experience. Same thing happened to me when I started bass fishing long time ago.The long, skinny bass are the hardest ones to get a accurate estimate on,that's why it's best to always carry a accurate scale!

What did your scale say?  For less that $4 everybody should have one!  My guess would be 4-5 lbs.

I don't have one...don't need one.  Don't care what they weigh... ;)

Every bass angler has fishing line so use it to measure your bass.

Lay the bass down flat, close it's mouth and run the the from the closed mouth to the end of the tail, cut to that length. Next run another piece of line around the Basscat the widest area and cut it off, then tie a over hand knot in that piece of line. Wrap both pieces around your hand and save them.

When you get home measure the pieces of line, length and girth ( the piece with the knot).

Length X Length X Girth divided by 1200 = weight in pounds for LMB within 10%.

Tom

PS average girth to length is about 75% if you don't have a girth measurement. Girth varies, length doesn't. Average girth bass 23.5" long weighs about 8 lbs.

Nah, I just don't care what they weigh.

There's big fish, medium fish, small fish....every once in a while I'll measure one...but I don't even do that often.

Once you weigh 'em, they stop growing.

It's a very good looking fish, but I don't believe it's 8 pounds.

if it is a kid, then i am thinking 4.5 to 5 pounds. Saw my neice holding up a 4.15 the other day that looked like the Minnesota state record largemouth bass. If it is someone 5'10 ish or taller, i think it is a 6 pounder. Imagine that fish at full arm extension, hand fits in the mouth, thick and wide belly. Thing is give or take 6 pounds.

You could put your fist in it's mouth so it is at least 5lbs.

Highly accurate measure of weight right there...

it was a person that i saw posted this picture on social media, the person claimed it was 8 pounds.....

I share your doubts, but I've aged past the point where I can muster any outrage....there was a time, however.....
