I am skeptical that this fish is 8 pounds

Sorry to burst your bubble, but it appears to be around 18in. and in the 4lb. catagory.  Nice fish though. What'd you get her on.  Looks like you were fishing from the bank.

What did your scale say?  For less that $4 everybody should have one!  My guess would be 4-5 lbs.

I should probably get a scale like the one that weighed that bass,since it's so generous weighing bass.In all seriousness that bass appears to be 4-5 pounds at most,not 8 pounds.

NO, NO, NO  scale. In my mind, my PB can be whatever weight I want it to be. It all depends who I'm talking too and how many drinks I've had.  If I'd weighed it, I'd have to tell the truth. This way it isn't a lie because I don't know for sure how big it was.

I wonder how many people that claim  to have caught 8-10 pounders have actually held a bass this size in their hands.Fish of this size are usually 24-28" long and look more like a freshwater version of a grouper than a typical bass.

Exactly.  There is no greater memory than the first time you see a bass that size surface, mouth wide open, shaking their head to try & spit out your lure.  I tell people that I take out fishing that I am looking forward to seeing the look on their face when they see that.  It will make even the most soft-spoken, church goer let out a "Holy S*** !!"

I'd say your skepticism is justified. IMO it will possibly push 6 but I'd be inclined to to guess it's probably closer to 5,

I know what he's getting at. somebody catching a fish in his local waters and coming out with a big claim. it's obviously not him.

Can't tell for sure if this is a "full grown" adult or a youth (though I can guess it's the latter).  This would help provide some scale.  I'd have to say... 4 to 5 lbs.  Not much larger.

Reminds me of a couple weekends back, when I had just parked my truck and trailer at Raystown early in the morning, and was walking down to my waiting boat, eager to get to my down lake spots while the topwater bite was still on, and catch some fish before the 4th of July whacko crowd showed up. Sure enough, a guy in a VW beetle pulled up, and started telling me how he was fishing live shiners from shore the night before, and caught two bass over 12 pounds. I started saying "Wow really? Sounds real nice" just trying to get him to end the conversation so I could start my day. In my mind, I'm thinking "either youre full of BS, your scale is majorly malfunctioning, or you need to call up the fish warden ASAP, since you just may have tied or broke the state record twice in one night."

I'm in agreement in the 4.5-5 lb range.  Any fish over 5lbs will look huge to the naked eye but once you get it on a scale you'll be surprised at how much lighter it ends up being compared to what your eyes are telling you.  Remember that even the pros on the Elite series catch hundreds if not thousands of fish each and every tournament and the big bass of the tournament will often be under 7 lbs.  An 8lb fish is a BIG F'ING FISH that you'll probably think to yourself you just caught your first DD.
