Brett's_daddy Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 So as you can tell from other posts I've made about the Whopper Plopper and other larger baits I haven't nailed down what line would be best to use for a WP 130 and a Savage Gear 6" Line Thru swim bait. The setup is a spinning reel set up. The rod is a Fenwick 7ft. MH (lure weight: 3/8 oz. - 1 oz.), the reel is a Pflueger President LE size 30. Since the 30 size only goes up to 10lbs. test mono (or equivalent 40lb. braid) I'm contemplating switching it out with a Shimano Sienna size 40 which would bump up the max line rating to 12lb. mono (or 50lb. braid) as well as giving me a deeper spool to work with. I've debated the pros/cons to both mono/copolymer and braid for heavier top water and swim baits, above all I want to avoid my line snapping and losing my expensive (to me) new lures which according to some folks braid has more of a tendency to do that than mono or copoly when casting heavier lures. If this holds true what brand of mono/copoly would be the toughest 12lb. test line I could get to minimize this risk (Berkley XT, Big Game, P-Line CXX etc.)? Quote
BiteFiend Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Tough to beat Big Game. Next would be Trilene XT. 1 Quote
Penguino Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 P Line CXX is strong as hell. Sufix Siege is also extremely strong, its just that it has tons of memory and feels like a slinky. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted July 13, 2016 Super User Posted July 13, 2016 A few thoughts ~ The WP 130 and a Savage Gear 6" Line Thru swim bait both weight less than 1.5 ounces - The occurrence of losing larger bait's on the cast while using braid is real, however may be a non issue in your particular instance. Most of the anglers who fish larger baits (and 1.5 oz is relatively small in comparison) are using revolving spool gear (bait casting). When a backlash stops the bait abruptly - the sudden shock parts the line. So many advocate the use of mono which is better suited to handle that situation without parting. Since you're using spinning gear, unless you're dead set on trying to break the record for distance on every cast, a simple lob will give you plenty of fish catching distance but will rarely result in a break off unless you're using very light line (braid or Mono) IMO a 30 size reel for your needs here is undersized. I'd recommend the 40 size. I'd also not advise putting 20 - 30 lb mono on a 30 or a 40 size spinning reel. I'd recommend a quality 40 or 50 lb braid - ***** point of interest ~ more important than the advertised / rated pound test here will be the diameter of the line. Some of the newer braids are being presented as 40 & 50 lb test but have a diameter that is very thin - too thin for your needs. I'd look for a quality line that's in the .013 or .014 inches / .33 or .34 millimeters range - that will offer a good mix of size, strength & shock absorbing ability to do what you'll need & want it to. So is Power Pro considered good quality? I know my local DSG has that in bulk and it's like .07 per yard. so for let's say 160 yards it would be $11.20. My question would be this...would a 40 - 50lb. Power Pro be as good or better than 12lb Big Game for top water? Quote
Todd2 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Recently converted to Big Game and am very happy. Don't let the price fool you. Quote
Airman4754 Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 CXX is absolutely ridiculous as far as break strength, but it's not very manageable. As far as strength and usability you're going to be hard pressed to beat Big Game. Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 14, 2016 Super User Posted July 14, 2016 Berkley Big Game! Hangup 15# & try breaking it off 3 Quote
KP Duty Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Cxx. I'm a believer in p line's coating process. It's like trilene 2.0 for me. Quote
timsford Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Big game is the toughest mono I've used. Just an FYI you can go a little higher on the lb test strength than what's printed on the spool. I have a friend that uses 14 lb big game on a 3000 size shaman reel and it works for him. If you want really strong line though braid is gonna be hard to beat. I'd say you could probably use your current reel and 30 lb power pro, unless of course you just want to justify a new reel lol 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted July 14, 2016 Super User Posted July 14, 2016 Use KVD L&L after each trip. Memory Issue resolved. Quote
