Templeton Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Hey guys! I'm moving back up to Ohio soon and wanted to know what all kind of tackle y'all have had success on in terms of pike and musky. I've got bass fishing covered in most areas, but wanna get into larger game. I wanna know rod set up reccomendations and line and lures you've had success on. Thanks, Templeton Quote
Nice_Bass Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 Don't need to go overboard....only thing I can say is match the gear to the lure weight which I am sure you do already. Time of year also matters- it makes a lot of sense to troll 12'' plugs deep for musky certain times of year and that takes a special set up. Other times a typical 3 treble jerkbait is the best choice and you throw that on the gear you have. For most of your typical casting of bucktails and such you can get away with some beefed up bass gear (not flipping stick as not great for moving baits obviously). I like Okuma rods and abu reels. Super salt shaker and berkely slim shad on 1oz plus jigheads year round, a big top water plug of your choice (honestly all popular musky plugs are pretty good). a crank like a Grandma and a Bondy for vertical fishing. I would not go overboard as it can get even more overcomplicated that bass fishing can be. First on my list is I would buy a good musky book that talks about the seasonal difference. There are some really easy times to catch them and some times where you are better off fishing for something else. No real need for steel leaders. Use #100 fluro and crimp it or just buy them premade. They will last a long time. honestly though I have caught more fish without a leader than with one however it is just a bit more nerve racking without one.... 1 Quote

Since when are muskies really easy to catch? Thats just a preposterous statement. Maybe easy to catch compared to a loch ness monster Quote

Super User Scott F Posted September 15, 2016 Super User Posted September 15, 2016 If you would like to increase your chance of success chasing Muskies, I have a little secret. Use smaller sized musky baits. Throwing 12 inch baits and Double 10s requires some heavy duty rods and reels to hold up not to mention the speed at which they will physically wear you out. Those baits will get the big girls, but reduce the number of hits you will get. If you are just starting out and would like a bit more action, stick to smaller bucktails, and smaller cranks. I have a remarkable amount of success with 1/2 ounce rattlebaits. Your heavier bass gear will work just fine for the biggest fish you are likely to get. Smaller baits will get big muskies as well as the smaller ones as well as any pike or big bass. Having more action will keep you in the game longer and not tire you out as fast. Quote
