d-camarena Posted July 11, 2016 Posted July 11, 2016 im looking to buy an arsenal of fishing rods for tournament fishing. Im looking to spend around 100 each. Im gonna buy about 5 rods. But i havent really tried rods in the 100 range. The 3 rods i currently own are zodias. been looking at the new lews tournament tp1, falcon bucoos, bps carbon light, h20 ethos ducketts, shimano compres but i havent settled on one brand. Anybody have experience with these? Or any suggestions? i need a punching rod, pitching rod, texas rig rod and deep diving cranking rod and maybe a jig rod but i know i can use one for a couple different techniques. Super User fishnkamp Posted July 11, 2016 Super User Posted July 11, 2016 Check out a Dobyns Fury series, they are built very well and have very good components for $110. Powell also falls in that price range with the Inferno series. For just a little more Dobyns has their Sierra series and Powell has the Max3D series and they run around $160. All of these rods are lite and feel real good in you hand.. They all have good components as well. Try and find a dealer in your area for both. They are listed on their websites. My local tackle shop carries these as well as Duckett, ***, Cashion, St Croix, and more but I always seem to get pulled over to the Powell and Dobyns racks. I fear soon my deck will be over run with them. LOL This means some of my 12 existing rods are going to go away to new homes. Do not overlook Abu Veritas, these are good rods if you can catch them on sale for around $75,. which happens from time to time. By the way fish a Falcon Buccoo I own the 7 foot trapmaster. It is a great rod for small to mid size cranks and traps but I would never pay full price, Wal-Mart discounts it to around $40 often. It retails for $100. Give the Dobyns and Powells a strong look you may split your arsenal right down the middle. 1 Quote

Fishin' Fool Posted July 12, 2016 Posted July 12, 2016 Since you currently own the Zodias rods you probably are going to be taking a step backwards buying $100 rods. Personally I would keep the $100 rods to reaction bite rods and save a little extra for your rods that need sensitivity. Saying this I own 2 Dobyns Fury for reaction bites but I have 2 NRX'S and a GLX for my bottom techniques. 2 Quote
Super User Darren. Posted July 12, 2016 Super User Posted July 12, 2016 I use Carbonlite rods and Compres, but the Compres are previous version with cork handles. Though both were spinning, I really like(d) them better than the current models. As for Carbonlites, I've got both casting and spinning. Casting I have M and ML and both are fantastic. Weight does matter to me, and the Carbonlites are much lighter, and tip-light, too. FWIW. 2 Quote

GORDO Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 STAY AWAY FROM VERITAS. I have broken 3 of them. I use a Dobyns Fury 7'3" H for my jigs and punching. I use a Mojo Bass 7' MH for spinner baits, deep divers, and 10" worms. I have another Mojo Bass 7' M that I use for basically ALL my t-rigs that are less than 1/2 oz. If you cant tell I LOVE the Mojo Bass rods, their tips are very sensitive and a lot of back bone. I caught my PB nothern (40" 23 lbs) on the MH throwing a size 14 husky jerk. Moral of the story, they are amazing for the price point. I also really like the Dobys Fury. Id say try them both out, get one of each see which feels better in your hand. Quote

thebillsman Posted July 13, 2016 Posted July 13, 2016 I had two Bucoo Micros and was really excited when I first got them but they were just too stiff for my liking after a few trips out. Definitely a quality rod but just not my style. Since then I have gone with a Fenwick Silverhawk and a rod that I can't exactly mention but its a two digit number. Both have been excellent for their respective applications. I would absolutely consider the Fury, the new Mojo's and the two I mentioned above. When considering rods at this price point customer service is a huge factor. Make sure you do business with the right company. Quote

They are crazy sensitive, really light, and are really comfortable to fish with since they have golf grips similar to the lews speed stick lites. IMHO they are a bargain at $100, however they are often on sale for $70- $75, which is a steal. I'm slowly converting my arsenal to these from *** *** and St. Croix's. The Tournament ZX's are almost twice as sensitive as my *** *** were. I'm amazed these don't get more love on here. 1 Quote

It's my Texas rig rod and has performed like rods much more expensive. The other is a Quantum Esclade HD that I got on sale at Dick's. It's also a 7 footer in medium heavy fast taper with micro guides and I use it for frogging. I'm very happy with both. Quote

Veritas 2.0 are too stiff for me.* St Croix Mojo pretty good rods at a hair over $100.* Really good $100 rod is the *** *** Black. I have the old split handle one. New are solid cork handle, but still really light.* 7'6" Berkley Shock is a good low cost Alabama Rig rod* For the money it's hard to beat the Academy H2O Ethos (Especially when on Rod Riot sale)* Personally don't care for the stainless guide inserts on the Duckett Ghosts, but that's me. Rod feels great in hand. Just held today a $100 Lew's. Really light and balanced. Impressive Can't comment on the Dobyn"s fury or Powell Inferno. Wish I could. * Rods I own and fish with. 1 Quote

CarolinaBoy4Life Posted July 14, 2016 Posted July 14, 2016 Dobyns Fury is a good rod. I have yet to buy one but I have fished one briefly. The only issue with the Carbonlites I recommended is they are always on backorder it seems. I called and they said first of August is when the next batch of rods would be coming in. BPS is near by so I will be going there this weekend to get some more rods and reels. May also order a Fury off TW Quote
