Whopper Plopper gear setup

What's the best rod and reel setup for the whopper plopper 130 and 90

130 I use a dobyns 795 fury sb rod, a tatula had 6:4:1 and 20 lb cxx. Same setup I use for small swimbaits.

Personally, I don't think you need to get too specialized for the plopper.

 The 90 I throw on the same rod I would throw a walking bait like a spook on. With 12 lb. mono.

 The 130 I throw on a heavy jig rod, currently it's on a falcon Amistad. with 17lb. line.

Any 6 or 7 something : 1 ratio reel will work fine.

I'm throwing my 130 and 90 on a 7ft. MH Fenwick HMG spinning rod with a Pflueger President LE reel. I haven't actually received my lures from Tackle Warehouse yet but I am waffling between a 30lb or a 40lb. braid. I'll post results once I have them.

I fish my 90 on a 7' MH Carbonlite on 14 lb mono.  Works great.

The 130 is gonna be way to big for that rod. It's very large and heavy bait. The 90 should be fine though.

The rod is rated up to a 1 oz. lure, the 130 weighs 1.38 oz. which is only .38 oz. above my rods rating...I've heard of many people who throw lures up to .50 oz. above their rods max rating with no problems, why should the 130 be any different?

That definitely depends on the rod. Like an NRX 894 is rated to 3/4oz but it handles 2oz with relative ease. 

An Okuma Citrix 7'MH is rated to 1oz, but 1oz on that rod feels like a 5lb dumbbell is hanging from it.

20 lb braid. Med heavy or heavy rod. Any type of reel. overrhinking the plopper is like over thinking a senko. But overthinking is the purpose of this forum I suppose.

I throw the 90 on a Dobyns Fury 734 a and the 130 on a 735 with either mono or braid.

I've been tossing the 130 on my swimjig setup: a Dobyns Champion 735 with 30lb braid. Works great.

I think most people's frogging setups would be fine for Whopper Ploppers, too.

Good to hear becuase for my birthday I'm getting a frogging/other grass baits set up and I really wanna try a whopper plopper ?

I pretty much only use the 90. Bought one of the 110 sized baits but haven't tossed it. For the 90 sized my go to setup for it this year has been:

 

Shimano Cumara Gen 1 7"2 MH

Shimano Exscence DC 8:1

13 # Sunline Defier Green

 

Today I had 3 bites on the plopper and went 3 for 3 on fish.

 

If I was tossing the 110 or 130 sized I would probably be looking for a rod that can handle up to 2 oz baits and has a little give to it like Moderate fast or regular taper

I throw the 130s on my frog/swimbait rod, an Irod rated 1/2-2oz.  It will throw one a mile and the rod is long enough to keep the line off the water when fishing from the bank.  The 90s I will throw on any rod that will cast it, I keep one in my tackle bag all the time as my "emergency" topwater.

I have a Daiwa Tat XT 7-4 Heavy Frogging rod for the 130.  Same rod in 7-1 MH for the 110.  I would not throw the 130 on the MH... but I would throw either the 110 or 130 on the Frog rod.  Those lures throw like a big sinker (and work well too)

For the "90" the same rod & reel with #20 lb. braid can be considered as well ... I know a fella with this set up who just bombs a "90" using a 7' MH spinning rod with 3000 series spinning reel loaded with #20 lb. Power Pro . Once a bass strikes he simply performs a sideways reel set and the no stretch nature of braid does the rest ...

I fish the 90 on a 7' M/F casting rod with 20lb braid. For the 130 I use my frog rod, a 7' 3" H/F with 50lb braid.

I throw my 90 on a MH/F casting rod with 12 or 14lb mono.

I absolutely agree. Ploppers are a no nonsense lure. Chunk and wind---The 90 being smaller can be thrown with a MH action rod and the 130 requires something with a little more backbone due to it's weight. They now have a 110 that I will be experimenting with very soon.
