BigTerp Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 What plastics do you guys use to trailer your hair jigs? I just started tying my own this year to start trying this summer and fall. Picked up a few of the Uncle Josh #101 spinning frogs, but they are getting harder and harder to come by. I have various plastic craws, creatures, etc. that look that they would work OK behind a small hair jig (1/16oz - 1/4oz), but just curious what you guys use. Should I just be looking for something to give a little action behind the hair with a similar color? Quote

Will Wetline Posted July 9, 2016 Posted July 9, 2016 When the water temp was in the low 40ºs - 50º this spring, I caught smallies on bucktail jigs without a trailer, slowly dragging them along the bottom. With water in the high 50ºs, I hung a Strike King Denny Brauer Bitsy Chunk on an 1/8 oz. hair jig and smallies liked that combo. For a 1/4 oz. jig I'd use a small chunk - 2 1/2" -2 3/4" or maybe a 3" double tail grub. Remember never to hurry a hair jig retrieve. They stay in my box when the water temp is above 55º. Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted July 20, 2016 Super User Posted July 20, 2016 I've had pretty good results with a 3" or 4" Fin-S Fish, depending on the size of the jig. Quote
papajoe222 Posted July 23, 2016 Posted July 23, 2016 In warmer water (65+), I like something with a lot of action when I hop it so I go with a paddle tail grub. If I'm dragging it, a curly tail grub gets the call. In cooler water I like something that floats so the jig will sit with a nose down attitude. I dead stick a lot under those temps and want a trailer that's smaller. A 2in. tube or the tail end of a Havoc bottom hopper fill the bill then. Quote
