An Outdoor Guy Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 so I just got my new reel today and I spooled it up with 50# power pro braid and I went to try it out and on the first cast I got a bad backlash. well I pulled and pulled and it wouldn't come out so I took it home and got it untangled by taking my spool out and doing it that way. my question is, Is my braid now weaker because I pulled on it pretty hard to try to get the backlash out? I heard somewhere that braid gets weaker by rubbing on itself. should I change it out or am I good? Sorry if its a dumb question I just don't want my line to break when I go to use it next Quote
riverbasser Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Pretty hard to hurt braid. I'm surprised it wouldn't pull out. That's one of my favorite things about braid, backlashes normally pull right out. Quote

I know! that's why I'm a braid fan, usually if I pull hard enough they'll come out but this time it didn't. no matter how hard I pulled. that's why I was worried the line is weaker now because of that. But 2 people telling me its fine I think it'll be alright. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 8, 2016 Super User Posted July 8, 2016 It is fine. Did you adjust the reel before you made that cast. Also did you put any mono or copolymer line on first? Braid can slip on a reel without either a piece of tape or mono line on it. I purposely purchase good quality but inexpensive mono or copoly line just for use as backing. Bass Pro Excel come in a big spool cheap. I also have used Suffix Elite ( I like the way it winds on under tension). Also make sure your arbor knot (knot around the spool) is tight. If it slips the reel will seem like it has a break or drag problem. Anyway I put about 1/2 spool of backing and the connect my braid with a uni to uni knot. Now spool up your braid. It works real well and a new spool of braid will fill 2 reels. Give that a try. Make sure you adjust the tension knob so the spool spins free but has no side to side play. Quote
S. Sass Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 As long as you didn't use a sharp object to pick it out it should be fine. Like mentioned braid is usually the best at being able to get out a backlash for me. Quote
Super User MassYak85 Posted July 8, 2016 Super User Posted July 8, 2016 Unless you actually took something like a metal pick and dug it out, I doubt you did any damage. Quote

I did wrap my arbor knot with electrical tape about 5-6 times before spooling. I also just got some cheap mono to use as backing for the next time I need to re-spool. I don't know why I didn't think of that before lol But no I didn't use anything sharp to pick at it. just my fingernails and ALOT of pulling. nothing ridiculous though I was afraid of pulling my spool out of the reel OH! one more question so I don't have to make another post. What knot is best when tying fluorocarbon to a lure or hook? I had a improved clinch knot break on me when I had a backlash....lost a pretty nice spinner bait today....not my day I guess ;/ Quote
Fish4bigfish Posted July 8, 2016 Posted July 8, 2016 Just a note... The spool on a baitcaster is a precision part and one of the most expensive pieces to replace. You can damage your spool by pulling to hard. Pulling by hand is fine. Just something to think about. 6 minutes ago, An Outdoor Guy said: I did wrap my arbor knot with electrical tape about 5-6 times before spooling. Super User MickD Posted July 8, 2016 Super User Posted July 8, 2016 Improved clinch should work fine on flouro if 1. you wet it as you pull the knot tight and 2. You "set" the knot well by pushing the column of twists into position as you pull the tag end, then pull very hard on the main line to really set the column of twists tightly into position. Hard to explain, but you want that knot to be really tight, and don't forget wetting as all this is going on. Wetting is important on any knot, especially true with flouro. Quote

I did that but it still broke. I'm afraid if I pull to hard ill break the line. I will try it again and pull harder this time Quote
Super User MickD Posted July 8, 2016 Super User Posted July 8, 2016 Sounds like bad flouro. Flouro is temperamental, and doesn't take well to getting kinked. Make sure you are not doing that. what pound test is it? Let me get this straight. You are using 50 # braid with a braid to flouro line and that is not breaking but the flouro to lure knot is? Quote

Super User MickD Posted July 10, 2016 Super User Posted July 10, 2016 You got it. when the line looks like that it did not break, but came undone. Lots of posts on here about good knots. Almost all will work fine IF done right, always lubed and always pulled hard to test after tying. The best flouro leader is actual flouro leader material, not flouro line. The leader material will be harder and tougher. But still has to be tied properly. Quote
An Outdoor Guy Posted July 11, 2016 Author Posted July 11, 2016 thanks a ton! I'm going to try the Palomar knot and see how that goes. hopefully no more break offs and / or knots coming undone. Quote
