if devoted leader line is 27 yards and 8$ while mainline fluorocarbon is 15$ for 200yards give or take, wouldn't it be more economical to use mainflorocarbon as a leader?

leader specific fluoro tends to be much stiffer and more abrasion resistant than mainline fluoro, which tends to be softer and more manageable. If you need the extra abrasion resistance for, say a toothy fish like a pike, then use the leader specific one, regular wont hold up.

if you want a stiffer more abrasion resistant leader, but feel like you are getting ripped off paying $8 for 27 yards just get the next size dimater up from what you had planned. If you were going to get 6lb leader specific floro, get a 8lb spool of mainline floro.

For a cheaper alternative get a spool of P Line CXX in 10 pound moss green.  It is a little stiff and breaks at close to 20 pounds.  It is very abrasion resistant as well.  I use that for leader material on all of my braid and could easily be a good choice for your situation.

@fishnkamp is spot on.

I don't typically use leader floro.  To me, using a super tough copolymer like CXX, Yozuri Hybrid, etc makes way more sense when I'm around rocks and toothy critters.  I keep spools of Sniper and InvisX around for when the water is super clear or fish are finicky and really require a stealthier presentation.  

The Idea of simply going up a line size to improve abrasion resistance is not necessarily true.  Fishing rocky rivers, I'll retie 12lb InvisX 2-3x as often as 8lb Hybrid.  Unless I'm fishing a dropshot or need to get super stealthy, copolymer leaders are way better in the snaggy stuff.  And cheap.  d**n are they cheap.

I tie 12 lb Stren Flourocast to 20 lb PP.  Cheap and have never broke off UNINTENTIONALLY.  I use an Improved Albright.  Works great

thanks, i use 10 pound cxx on my casting reel, just got it today. do i need a wire leader for pickerel or will cxx hold up?

Can you easily cut cxx with a knife? If so, a pickerel can easily cut it too.
