Which rod/size to buy?

I want to start getting into fishing,  but have no knowledge or experience on the subject. I'm moving to Tampa in a week, and want to do stream/river/Lake fishing. I don't have any plans to do saltwater fishing as of yet. With that being said,  what 's a good rod and size? if you really want to get into bass fishing ild do yourself a favor ad dont buy something telescopic...and ild shy away from amazon as well go to a local baitshop and find somehting start a repor with the guys there that way if nothing else you will walk out of there with a little more knowledge of the local fishing holes.  go there feel every pole find one you like and feels good in your hands speak with them about local hot tactics and you will be way better off

ps im not saying go in there looking for a high dollar combo by anymeans either and by local tackle shop i really mean a tackle shop where hopefully they are knowledgable not walmart or something of that nature

By all means you can start out with a kit like
that. They're quite common in Asian markets,
from what I've seen (based on buying other
gear from sites that sell these).

It may not be the best, but if you are trying to
decide whether you really like the sport, it
can suffice--if portability is what you're looking
for specifically.

Otherwise, I'd suggest, as @dsqui does, to 
find something local - either a "mom & pop"
fishing shop or a Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc.

There you can find some very nice combos
which will serve you well to start in the sport.

Start with a medium action spinning rod and and a moderately priced reel. I just did a check on line at Dicks Sporting Goods and i was pleased to see a combo like this.  The reel is going for $40 .00 alone. so the combo is a good deal and it is not some piece of junk.

I was leaning towards a telescopic rod because I can put it in my  backpack and ride my bike through the inlands. I'm sure there is tons of bait shops, but didn't want to pay more for something I could get myself. I do computing,  and can say buying parts at a store is always overpriced than buying online. I didn't know if that was true for the fishing world. Anyway,  I plan to  buy some hooks and shrimp as bait, and see what happens.  Thanks for the info..

They do make 2 piece and even what they call 'travel rods" which are 3 or 4 piece rods.  They wil cost more but be of much better quality.  They even come in their own tube.

I'd try a 2 piece rod instead of that. Or a travel rod with 3 or more pieces if a 2 piece is still too long. I'd try some in hand if I could but yes, you can get stuff way cheaper online. There are lots of cheap places to buy lures and stuff. Just look around for sales on lures and terminal tackle. If you are just starting out soft plastics and a selection of jigheads, hooks, and sinkers is enough to catch bass. Do searches on ned rigs, shaky head jigs, and drop shooting to learn what to use and how to fish each technique. Good luck and welcome to the forum

I'll check it out, I would rather spend a bit more than buy a crap rod. From what I read telescopic snap easily, so probably go with a 2 piece.

you may spend a little more at the bait shop to buy your rod but that is what keeps them open.  small bait shops arent like major chains every penny counts in there world.  always support your local shops if you can.  once there gone so is all the knowledge that comes with them
