iiTzChunky Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 I know a few bass are hanging out around here I threw a jig right past all those leaves last night and one hit before I even hit the bottom wasn't expecting that so I missed him and after 15 min of fishing around the area I had no more bites. All those leaves are so dense everything just sits on top. The outside of this entire pond is like this. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 6, 2016 Global Moderator Posted July 6, 2016 A hollow body frog or weightless plastic right along the edge, but a frog without a doubt. 5 Quote
iiTzChunky Posted July 6, 2016 Author Posted July 6, 2016 I'll try this but it seems so thick I don't make any sort of presentation in the water. It will just skim the top of the leaves. The bass will still blow up on that? Quote
frosty Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Definitely a frog. While it looks choked out on top, it's probably not as bad underneath. I had bass blow up on a soft plastic I was reeling in on top of weed mats that were so thick I couldn't get a weightless T-rig through the top. Quote
kylek Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 A frog would be my first choice followed by a t-rig with 3/8oz or heavier weight. How deep is it around that tree? 2 Quote

How deep is it around that tree? OK, frog it is. But it's not very deep, that's right up next to the shore but far enough out that I know bass are gonna be waiting to ambush frogs for an easy target. It's just hard to get my frog far enough out there, will the bass blow up through the leaves to get the frog tho? Quote
kylek Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Yes, they will blow up on it. Just make sure to wait before setting the hook. Make sure you feel them on the line first! I have had them blow up through thick moss and even huge lily pads. It is exciting and frustrating at the same time! Quote
blckshirt98 Posted July 6, 2016 Posted July 6, 2016 Frog for sure, and maybe a big heavy weedless punching setup, like a 1oz Strike King Slither Rig. Quote
Super User WRB Posted July 6, 2016 Super User Posted July 6, 2016 Look closely at the cover it has lots of small holes for the bass to see through and lures to penetrate. Make several cast at every angle you reach and slow down. You need tackle that can get a bass out of the vegetation, this where braid shines. Tom 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted July 6, 2016 Super User Posted July 6, 2016 I'd be flipping & pitching. 2 Quote
Matt Duprau Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 Agreed with the frog as the first choice! If they won't come up to you then time for you to go down to them. Next i'd be throwing on a punching setup and dropping all around that log. Good luck Quote
Jon P. Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 try either a popping frog or a heavily weighted frog stuffed with lead shot to better plow through the crap on the surface. the key is to create enough commotion so that the bass can locate your lure through the weeds. a punching rig may also work, but I wouldn't place any solid bets. also see if you cant get your hands on a thai jumpfrog lure, they make great commotion even through the thickest cover. Turkey sandwich Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 Frogs, Jigs, punch/T-rigs, etc are all in play. Some folks might suggest pitching Senkos into the holes. I'd rather drag a lightly weighted worm over the top, allowing it to fall into the holes. Bottom line: most of your weed less soft plastic options are in play. I might suggest fishing all of the above on either straight braid or braid with a heavy floro or copolymer leader. This is where 40-80lb braid shines. 1 Quote
Onvacation Posted July 7, 2016 Posted July 7, 2016 Is this up your way? I've got plenty of frogs that would love to be tossed in there. Also have some jigs we could try. Let me know. Quote
