Michael McCullough Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 I have a 2016 Feel Free lure 13.5. This has a box in middle of Kayak, front of seat. To mount Fish finder on, with battery in box, and transducer under neath. Am trying to pick out a good Fish Finder. Withing he $430 range. I've currently been looking at the Garmin Striker 4DV $179 ( But screen is only 3.5 ) Been looking at the Lowrance Hook 5 $399( Has missed reviews ) Also Been looking at the Humming Bird Helix 5 SI KVD combo. It is on sale for $423. ( Not sure side imaging would even work with me, since The hull of my Kayak would be on sides of transducer. If I lowered it then would become damaged.) Any help is much appreciated. If there is a better Fish Finder not listed here you would recommend please do so. And tell me why. I just wanna get the best bang for my buck. Thanks. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 4, 2016 Super User Posted July 4, 2016 There are two Humminbird Helix 5 DI units. One with and one without GPS if you cannot use a SI unit. Less cost than the SI version. 1 Quote
Michael McCullough Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 Yes I seen that. DI is a must. But so is GPS. The Helix 5 GPS and DI is $330 for $90 more I get the KVD combo. And thought might be a better deal. Quote

The SI unit does not have a DI sonar crystal. It creates the DI view by blending the two SI pulses. 1 Quote
Michael McCullough Posted July 4, 2016 Author Posted July 4, 2016 now that was a helpful reply wow. Did not know this about the DI. Defintely wont buy thanks Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 4, 2016 Super User Posted July 4, 2016 Only the ONIX/ION SI units have a dedicated Down Imaging crystal in their transducers. Quote
GetBent Posted July 4, 2016 Posted July 4, 2016 Whatever you do, get a 5" screen or bigger. DI is a nice feature and if you fish open water or have horrible memory get gps also. Me me and my friends have spots named after odd ball land marks. One is huisache (small green bush with thorns) amongst a bunch of dead trees it's the only place with green branches. Underneath is a huge pile of rocks which always treats us good. Another place is the Gatorade spot. Someone a long time ago used it for a marking buoy I guess. There is been times the lake dropped 15' and without gps it would have been hard to find the exact area. Quote
