pigeonlake Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Im looking to buy a new rod for throwing soft plastics in grass, Not matted grass but hydrilla ect. I am confused as to what action to go with. I was either looking at a mh 7.2 1.4 to 3/4 or a heavy 1/4 to 1 ounce fast tip 7-2. Theres also 3/8 to 1 ounce. Pretty confusing. I do use 1/4 and sometimes 3/4 weights Powell Max 3D Casting Rod 7'3" Heavy I have been considering this rod. Let me know what you all think. I would like to keep it to under 150 any brand considered. Quote
Fish4bigfish Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 Dobyns fury 734 is what I am currently using for submerged weeds. Heavy rods fast action and braided lines. I fish a lot of milfoil and hydrilla coon tail etc. The fury line is great! Quote
pigeonlake Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 i will look at it. Is it a light rod. Quote
Fish4bigfish Posted July 2, 2016 Posted July 2, 2016 It is light enough. Where dobyns shines is the balance. Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 Both the Dobyns and the Powell work nice. I really like the Powell 734 Heavy. It goes from 1/4 to 1 ounce. I would also consider both the IRG 704c and IRG 744c Irod Genesis rods. They are light and well made. I fish one Powell and two Irods but like all three suggestions made here. 1 Quote

I admit I am partial to dobyns because they are based 20 min from me! Quote
Super User fishnkamp Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 Well they make a nice rod. I am lucky a small independent tackle shop opened up 20 minutes from me back in December. This is a tough place to open a shop since we are 45 minutes away from a Cabelas and 20 minutes from a Bass Pro. This shop is a Powell, Irod, Dobyns ,Black ***,Cashion, and 3 or 4 other brand dealer. He has them in stock to put in your hand. The shop is quickly building a clientele that understands what it offers and it is doing well. One of the two owners tournament fishes our electric only reservoirs and the other tournament fishes the tidal waters so they are keyed into what is needed for our waters. Quote
