soopd Posted July 1, 2016 Posted July 1, 2016 My fishing partner has Lowrance hds 12 and hds 10. We are able to scan ledges and are able to pick out schools of bass. I have a humminbird 798. It Does good at showing structure, cover, and bait fish. However, I can't see schools of bass with it no matter how I change the settings. I really like humminbird and would like to purchase a Helix 10. Does anyone have a comparison between a helix 10 and a Lowrance hds 10? Does anyone have any screenshots of schools of bass with a helix 10? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 1, 2016 Super User Posted July 1, 2016 Which Helix 10 model and what setup with a HDS-10 ??????? The Helix 10 display has about 6,000 more pixels per square inch than the HDS-10 Quote
soopd Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 I have not seen a helix 10 except for in the store. My partner uses the side and the down scan to find fish with the hds 10 with a lss2 structure scan box. He scans on 455 most of the time and switches to 800 to clean things up. The helix 10 with side and down imaging. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 The Helix 10 display has about 6,000 more pixels per square inch than the HDS-10. Are you using the HDSI transducer with the 798? The 798 has about four times better display resolution than the HDS-10, it has the highest display resolution in the industry for a LCR unit. If you don't see bass with the 798, you are not where they are, do not know how to operate the unit properly or don't have the transducer installed correctly. I used one of the 798 models for six years and had it setup to use at the console and bow with dual mounts, transducers, and power cords. Just sold it early this year. Look at the posted screen shots at the top of the forum. ANY Humminbird Side Imaging unit will do the same. There are some Helix 10 screen shots posted. I don't have one of those models. The Helix series is just the current version of the former number series. They do the same with the same parts. There is no new sonar feature difference. Quote
soopd Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 I have the transducer that came with the unit. It is not the HD unit. I have had the unit for awhile. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 This is the transducer you should be using to get the best performance: Quote
soopd Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 I think mine must be the compact transducer. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 All three 798's came with the XNT 9 SI 180 T transom Compact SI transducer that is about 4" long. The HDSI transducer is 6" long with longer SI crystals which produce a thinner SI pulse and sharper images. Quote
soopd Posted July 2, 2016 Author Posted July 2, 2016 Would it be worth the price to purchase the HDSI transducer. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted July 2, 2016 Super User Posted July 2, 2016 Do a web search for XHS 9 HDSI 180 T. There is a wide range of prices and suppliers. MSRP is $269.99 Quote
