I just glued up a batch of Neds for the weekend.  I swear they must have reformulated the TRDs at some point, as some of them feel very soft and stretchy, like a zinker, while some of the newer ones are much more firm and less elastic.

In any case, I am giving up both the zinkers and TRDs and moving to cut-down hula stickz.   They seem to be the sweet spot in terms of firm/softness for me.

Be careful gluing too many up or fishing and keeping them rigged. The light wire hook tends to rust pretty quickly and break.

Hah, yea.  But in this case, I am taking my GF wade fishing this weekend, so between the two of us I suspect we will snag and loose most of what I prepped today.

Do you mean the hooks are significantly more likely on break if you keep a plastic rigged on it? I usually keep 3 ned rigs all pre-rigged in my tackle box.

I just take them out of the bag, throw it on the jig and fish it! No muss, no fuss. Simple as that.

I have had some hooks break. They were on jigs I had fished the previous week and didn't take the plastic off. I assume it is because of the salt and are such light wire. I've found the keeper on the Z Mann jigs will keep the bait on so I don't super glue any more. It doesn't look "perfect" but the fish don't care. I rig the night before with fresh plastic and take it off after the trip and rinse the jig head. They seem to be lasting longer. I live in a humid environment so that's another reason I don't keep them rigged in a box in the boat anymore.

I've heard that comment before but a recent post here had pictures and comment to the contrary. I don't know what is 100% accurate.

Have you actually tried this, are you commenting from your actual experience. Or from internet reading etc?

It's happened to me. Forgot about it and dipped in JJ's, dissolved like pouring gasoline on Styrofoam.

Just saw on Bassmaster that for iCast, there will be a bigger 4" TRD along with a 3/0 Shroom head.

I do not understand the 4" TRD.  It is super close to a Hula Stick and only an inch shorter then a zlinker.   The jighead is more or less the same as the several already on the market aimed at hulagrubs.

I think they are going after the crowd that refuses to believe the a little TRD or half Zinkerz could catch anything of size. The only reason I might try it, is cut it in half you have a 2" bait vs a 2.5". Really don't see the need for a bubba sized TRD though, but I betcha they sell a lot of them. This will be for the Texas finesse club;) We Midwest guys and gals can continue to catch our smaller bass on the Ned rig.

Caught my first fish on a ned rig tonight. I was pretty impressed by the hook. Nervous I would bend it not using a light outfit.

That sounds likely.  Good on them for making money, but elaztech is such a cool material, I wish they made more lures that took advantage of it.

I would just love a version of their current tube, but solid.  You could trim both the body and the skirt how ever you liked, giving a super flexible bait.

If you mean a solid body tube that can be fished on the same jig heads, that's being released at ICAST next week from what I've been told :)

...and yes, the 4" TRD and 3/0 jig head is going after the shaky head (and traditional/tourney bassin') crowd. They're even using Ned's term and referring to it as a "power finesse" bait.

Damm, that is good news.  I use the hula sticks almost exclusively now, but cut them down to 3-2.5".  I always agonize over what to do with the cut off "stumps".  I have tried stretching them out a ton and gluing them to small panfish jigs, but I can't say that they are any more effective then a small grub.

I get the power finesse angle, but that new lure is so close to a Hula Stick, it seems like they could have just marketed it in that role without having to get a new mold up and running.  I still want my elaztech ribbon-tail worm.  Or a small beaver-style bait.  Or some a split-belly version of their minnows.

Didn't one of the Midwest finesse guys come up with the TRD tube? That one looks like a winner.

I've been able to get my hands on the Big TRD. They definitely catch fish like the smaller TRD does.

I finally had a chance to hunt up a picture:

Man, if these things are half and good as I hope they will be, I am going to buy a million of these suckers.

I just knew there would be a bigger TRD coming...  I had hoped it would be a 2X or 3X version of the existing one; not just a longer one.   Something with similar dimensions to the TRD but just giant-sized.  Oh well...

Tight lines,

Bob

I think the bigger TRD setup will be really nice to have.  Right between the NED and a shaky head sort of deal.  Also the pattern separation let's you know when to turn the hook up, which can be tough with Elaztech.  I would fish the heck out of that!

Give it time, it's a lucrative bait market so I'm sure they will be making ALL KINDS of Ned variations in the coming years.  I would love a 5" fat TRD and accompanying heads though!
